How to improve Higher Education in India

Education is something about learning and learning is directly related to interest and interest comes in something if by doing that we enjoy. In Indian education the biggest drawback is that whatever we study at that time we don't know the practical use of that subject and so we don't take it so seriously. Later when we are in need of that knowledge we are already far from that.

I would like to suggest that.

To make higher education better our basics should be made stronger. Till 10th-12th if children will be taught in such a way that they enjoy studying same as sports or some other activity, not just to get a certificate then they can be better prepared to be good for higher education as well as they will really become an asset for the nation.

I think the way reservation is implemented is not right. I am not against reservation but I want it to implement in some other way. Why convent schools are so famous and attracts people is the basic question. Why can't our government strictly provide the same facility for other children who are economically weak? I think every child should get the basic education and good facilities and then we can get better quality and healthy competition.

Why worry about higher education when our basic education is not in place? I think someone has already raised this issue in one of the posts above.

We have as much as 60% dropout rate till class tenth itself. And if we talk of the total % of population which reaches college/ higher education, it must not be more than 20%.

Even if we are talking about that 15-20 % population, the most important factor I think, is the long-term goal of education. That doesn't just pertain to churning doctors, engineers, managers etc. More than that we need citizens who are not just specialists in their fields but can also think in a more holistic manner about developmental issues, Social problems, about the country and its people.

Now even if one talks about specialization, our modes of assessment in any area are so crude and behaviorist that real expertise and technical advancement are a far-off dream. For instance, what’s the use of medical students taking an exam for physics? Or why should engineering students learn phonetics, which is now a part of the so-called Communication studies, sum new fad someone has come up with, probably to open a job market for a particular class of experts.

Why can’t we rather have compulsory or optional courses on environmental, social and ethical questions? I think if we have more of such content, we would all be working towards a better education and future overall, rather than just higher education.
