In India, most men prefer marrying working women owing to the increasing financial demands. But as soon as a baby is born to her, and if she intends to look after the baby and still wishes to continue with her job- most opine that the only job suited to her is that of teacher. This job is invariably forced upon her and imposed on her in every possible. Even if the mom in question doesn’t like or enjoy teaching or wishes to change her career options or wants to continue with her previous job, and at the same time she wants to be an engaged parent and at the same time enjoy the benefit of working and earning – the teacher job is imposed on her. So what do you think is the answer?

Well, personally for me I never had any intention of becoming a teacher because it is not my cup of tea. Though as a child I used to pretend playing the role of teacher and I used to enjoy it. But as I grew up, I had decided to choose or rather happen to become an Instructional Designer.

I think that an individual should voluntarily choose the job of a teacher rather than taking it up as the last resort or out of compulsion. This way the quality of education and teaching will get better and not degrade. When a person chooses something on his/her own and not under any obligation or compulsion and enjoys doing it, the result gets better. Job satisfaction that a person derives from a preferred job is higher.

Just because a lady who is a now a mom, who has decided to become a more engaged and an involved parent, does this very fact takes away the right from her to choose her preferred job or career options? Suddenly, out of blue she is asked to pursue a career which doesn’t really excite you.

To me the following reasons make everybody come to the conclusion that the job of a teacher is the best job for mothers and customarily fulfills the career, financial, and parental need.

  • The first and foremost reason being that the working hours is less as compared to corporate jobs.
  • You can bring back work and finish it at home.
  • You can give more time to your kids and family.
  • At times you can bring your kid(s) over to schools and finish off your work.
  • You can get a long summer vacation, plus other vacations, and holidays as per the school and dedicate more time to your family.
  • You can accompany your child and take up the responsibility of picking up and dropping your child at his/her school, where you work as a teacher.
  • If you decide to call it a sick day, there are others in the school who can act as your substitute.

But wait, there are disadvantages too:

  • Though working hours are less as compared to other jobs, a teacher has a lot of work other than teaching in a classroom. This entails bringing work at home.
  • Secondly, it is difficult to pay your bills only with the job of a teacher. So in some way you have to make up for it and take up another job.
  • You are already a teacher to students at school; in addition you have to play the role of a teacher for your own kids too. A difficult and challenging task it is indeed.

If you really like being around kids and enjoy teaching, then a teaching job is a blessing in disguise. But, if like me you don’t really enjoy this role then there are other job opportunities you can look forward too. Patience is the key here. Simply, working and not making any money out of it can do no good. All you have to do is do a lot of research and see what works best for you and your family.
