Modernization has helped in the increase in the number of modern day facilities. With the increase in the number of modern day amenities and facilities, many more diseases have also increased. Our eating habits have changed drastically because of our busy schedule amidst the modern world. This has also changed time schedule of eating. Man has become careless towards himself and has made himself away from environment due to increase in the number of modern day amenities and facilities which are all artificial substitutes. All these has made an effect on man's health. Man has become lazy and keeps himself always relaxed amidst all these facilities. This habit has made him obese. He accumulates fat in his body and his body has become a home to hundred's of diseases. Man has invented all the devices for his leisure but he has not kept himself fit to enjoy all those facilities and remain relax amidst leisure. What is the reason for this? Reason is that his body is surrounded by and affected by so many diseases that these facilities have become a curse to him and he is not able to enjoy them at their best.

It is not true that measures are not taken to get rid of these diseases. Many studies and researches have been conducted in the field of medicine and surgery and progress is also seen in this aspect. Many new inventions and discoveries have been done. Even after all these efforts, diseases are always seen dominating and overpowering man from all aspects.

Diabetes is not a new disease. It is well known about the fact that effect of diabetes seen today was not seen before two decades. Earlier, only few people were affected by it. But, today lots of changes are seen in life styles of people. Due to lack of exercise and proper diet, diabetes has taken a form of dreadful disease. The disease which would occur in 50-60 years of age is today seen affecting kids too.

Reason for rapid spread of this disease is changes in life style, laziness and carelessness. Attraction towards fast food, westernization and lack of daily exercises also help in the rapid spread of diabetes. Due to excess consumption and fondness towards fast food, people have stopped consuming healthy nutritious food.

It is seen that two types of people are more affected with this disorder. One among them is who do not consume nutritious food and the other one is  who excessively consume food rich in fat. Among first type of individuals, insulin amount produced is less. To fulfill their insulin requirements, artificial insulin intake is required. Other type of group as consumes excess of fat becomes overweight. Due to the excess of weight, they get affected by diabetes. Even after this, if diet is not controlled then due to increase in excess of fat and increasing weight, diabetes worsens.

Diabetic patients who are overweight need less amount of insulin units. If such patients can control diabetes by keeping control on their diet, then their treatment becomes quite easy. They can even get rid of their disease. This task though seems very difficult but is not impossible. Control on diet and daily 2-3 miles of walk can help a diabetic affected person to become free from diabetes.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE FOLLOWED THROUGH DIET:-

Diabetic patients by adopting following precautions in their diet can control their diabetes very efficiently:-

  1. Diet of diabetic patients should comprise of vegetarian, low in calorie and less amount of fat food.
  2. Diet should contain fruits, green vegetables, milk, milk products and sprouts.
  3. Food should be chewed many a times which will make digestion easier.
  4. Diabetic patients diet should be such that which would enhance their digestion. Fruits and vegetables are very useful to increase the digestive power.
  5. Tea, coffee, snacks prepared from all purpose flour, tin preserved fruits, sweets, chocolates, pastries, pudding etc..... should be consumed in very little amount. All these things interfere in digestion.
  6. Spinach, tomato, mushrooms and other vegetables should be consumed in large amount. Cucumber, apple, onion and garlic prove very beneficial in this disorder. Onion and garlic reduces amount of glucose in blood.
  7. Carrot also is very beneficial in case of diabetic patients. They should daily consume carrot juice in both morning and evening. Apart from this, carrot-spinach juice proves to be very beneficial.

In this way by following proper diet if diabetic patient go for daily walk in the morning and evening time, he can improve his medical condition. For diabetic patients, daily walk is the best exercise. This is the only exercise which does not require physical stress. If in this aspect, schedule if followed properly, patient can become disease free. Patient who just want to control diabetes through medicines only, should be made aware of the fact that doctors of western countries too believe that diabetes is better controlled by diet rather than diabetic medications.

Studies have shown that diabetic patients who can control their diabetes through diet, if due to their obesity are given insulin treatment then 90% of them within 3-4 years die due to heart attack. Thus not only doctors of our country but even from foreign countries have come to a conclusion unitedly that treatment of diabetes requires changes in life styles, proper diet, control of weight and strict exercise regime.

IMPORTANCE OF YOGA IN DIABETES:-

Yoga is not new. It is not a gift of modern age to mankind. Actually, yoga is been practiced since olden times. It is a never failing weapon through which man becomes free of diseases and can spend life happily and stress free.

For man, yoga is the only exercise which yields mental, physical and spiritual benefits at the same time. In contrast, other exercises can only yield one benefit. One who adopts yoga, remain young looking even in their old age. They become active and alert like a youngster even in their old age. Yoga makes body beautiful, strong, strengthened and ever glowing.

RULES OF YOGA:-

  1. Best time to do yoga is in early morning. However, even during evening time, yoga can be done.
  2. Yoga should never be done forcefully. If any posture is tough, body should not be forced to accomplish it in a day itself. In fact, efforts should be done on a daily basis to learn and do it in a right way.
  3. Yoga should be always done in an open and peaceful place, free of noise. Concentration cannot be achieved in places where there is lots of noise and pollution. In such places full benefits of yoga cannot be achieved.
  4. Immediately after having food, yoga should not be done.
  5. Women during pregnancy should not perform it.
  6. Some times during yoga, body parts get stressed. Instead of running to doctor, same yogasana should be repeated slowly. Strain automatically own its own gets corrected.

Diabetic patients should perform ushtrasana and chakrasana which would prove very beneficial to them.

USHTRASANA:-

Precautions:-

  • Initially, this aasan should not be done for more time. It should be gradually increased.
  • Hernia patients should not perform this aasan.

Method:-

Person should lie on his stomach. Both the legs should be bent from knees. Both the foot are held by hands. The hands and legs are held together and are stretched upwards. This posture will lead chest and thighs to rise up from the floor. Breathing should be kept normal. After some time, one should come back to normal position.

Benefits:-

  • This yoga position if practiced on regular basis rules out the complain of constipation.
  • Biggest enemy of diabetes i.e., obesity will get corrected. Diabetic patients who has accumulated fat in places like stomach and thighs should perform this yoga for 15-20 minutes.
  • This yoga makes back bone flexible.
  • It is also helpful in case of joint pains.

CHAKRASANA:-

Method:-

Person should lie on his back. Palms and feet should be touched to the ground. Middle portion of the body should be raised upwards. This position should be maintained for some time and later person should come back to their original position. Initially, this yoga should be done for few minutes at a very slow pace. As per the ability of a person it should be increased gradually. During initial times it should be done for 4-5 times. Breathing should be kept normal during this time.

Benefits:-

  • By regular practice of chakarasana, diabetic patients benefit a lot.
  • Blood circulation in brain improves.
  • Body becomes flexible and health improves.

There are many such yogasanas, which yield great help to diabetic patients. Thus, yoga has to be adopted and made an integral part of one's life. Man thus can gain valuable treasure of health. Also, man should concentrate on his eating habits. Obesity is considered to be the biggest enemy of body because it does not come alone, it brings along with it hundred's of diseases. Thus, diabetic patients as far as possible should keep themselves away from becoming obese. If they weigh normal then weight should not be allowed to increase. If they are obese then they should try their best to get rid of obesity.
