India is a land of many religious faiths. So there are hundreds of festivals  in India. Besides the religious festivals, there are festivals based on the worship of nature. Hindu festivals are more than the others.

The Vaishnavites celebrate the Deepavali, Krishna Jayanthi or Gokulashtami, Sri Vaikunta Ekadasi and Ramanavami. The Savities celebrate the Dasara, the Durga Puja, Vinayaka Chaturthi, Mariamman Festival, Arudha Dharshan, etc. The Buddha Jayanthi is celebrated by Buddhists.

The car festival is common to both vaishnavites and  saivites. In madurai the chitra pournami is an important festival. The pongal festival is a famous one in tamilnadu. Onam is the greatest festival for the hindus in kerala. The holy festival, the vaishaki and the kumbh mela are also important festivals in north india.

Christians celebrate christmas, muslims celebrate the Ramzan, the bakrid, the meelad-in-nabi and the muharram. These festivals keep them religious and active. They add  charm to their life and give them some rest from their professional work. They also unite the people of the same faith,.
