Data get stored in the Hard Disk in a scattered way, here and there. The storing of a file in separate areas of memory scattered throughout a hard disk called fragmentation. The function of defragmentation is to rearrange all those data properly that computer can find them easily. This is why after defragmentation, your computer works faster. Two types of fragmentation are there, external and internal.
