What is Ghotra? How it differs from caste?

The Khap panchayats are opposing same Ghotra marriage. Thus they support inter-ghotra marriages. At the same time, inter-caste marriage is opposed. Thus it is necessary to get an explanation about the exact meaning of Ghotra and caste and their significance in Hindu society.

@Gulshan, in the HIndu religion, it is believed that all the communities have descended from Rishis or Munis from ancient times. For eg, my gotra is Mudgal, Mudgal is the name of one of the Rishis. Hence it is belived that all the people whose gotra is Mudgal, has descended from Mudgal Rishi and are therefore of one blood. It is due to this fact, the same-gotra people are considered as brothers and sisters and hence the opposition to same gotra marriages.


But considering that centuries have passed since the actual families started by these rishis and it is bound to have happened that the descendents married within their own communities. Hence the gene pool and blood pool cannot have remained pure for any gotra. Therefore, this belief is NOT at all relevant now and only a cause for horrible incidents of honour killing.

A caste is what a society dictates your station in that society from birth to death.


where as coming to Ghotra, Avoidance of same ghotra marriage was not a superstitious decision, but it had a scientific reasoning.The effect of ghotra marriage remains until 7 generations. what the reason is genetic make up is completely different even within two persons of same ghotra. First need to understand the science. same ghotra marriages may lead to disorders in child birth.

Gotra means clan. It broadly refers to people who are descendants in an unbroken male line from a common male ancestor. Marriages within the same Gotra are prohibited.
