We should never punish the child for bad behavior. The punishment will not only make them fear from you, it might also encourage them to lie and hide their mistakes in the future. Too many punishments can negatively affect their mental health. We should understand why they did what they did, and talk to them calmly and understand them. We should teach them what's right and what's wrong.
