Are Custom ROMs better in Android?

Well Android have already launched its new version Jelly Bean. For now this update is not available for all phones. That means we can't go for official updates for now..

But I have read online that there are few custom roms available using which we can upgrade to Jelly Bean.. But what I want to know that is it better option to go for custom rom if it is available for our phone model? How much they are stable in compare to official version?

Since Android is open source, developers are free to take stock ROMs, modify them, strip them of garbage, optimize them, add things, and pretty much do whatever their imagination and skills allow.

Advatages:
Update Frequency
Better Performance And efficiency
Upgrading To A Better/Later Version Of Android
Ability To Install heavy memory Apps To The SD Card

Disadvantages:
Something Could Go Wrong with the OS.
Clean Wipe
Potential Problems
You May Void Your Warranty

Android being open source attracts developers to take stock ROMs - modify them and take away useless data, optimize them, add useful data, and include what they can do to make it better. You know I have limited knowledge on this subject as I write for you. Cheers.

You can expect better and uninterrupted performance from custom ROMs in Android.
