Shyness arises from lack of self confidence. This may also be towards unfamiliar persons or places. You need time to adjust to strangers or new places. Thus if you have no sisters in your family, you may be shy of talking to girls.

In my personal opinion, lack of confidence should be termed as the prime reason for being shy. The things that we know, we can speak of confidently, but the same is not the case for things that we are ignorant about.
