Throughout the world, large dams have been built to provide electricity, irrigation or flood control. From an environmental and social perspective, large dams raise a variety of issues.
Though big dams are necessary, they lead to submerging of living places. This makes the people homeless. Mostly governments fail to compensate the people who lose their lands. This in its turn leads to social unrest.

There can be many reasons behind the conflict of big dams as they are constructed for great purposes:-

1. When the lock gates of dams are opened during the rainy season, the neighbouring villages get flooded with water. This is one of the reasons behind the conflict.
2. One more reason is the release of water to the neighbouring states for the purpose of agriculture.
3. When the hydro-electricity is produced from the stored water of the dams, the project gives great advantage to all the nearby villages and states. Any violation of rules may cause conflict.

There may not be any conflicts as such, but smaller dams built to cater to a small town makes more sense since it makes each village and town self sufficient, but this is not always possible, so we need to have both...

Actually some of these are genuine while other conflicts are there to get themselves popular who find this subject as good way to come to limelight. Some so-called social workers trying to show themselves in political arena keep the issue alive.
