The saint who preached 'One caste One Religion and One God' for man

Narayana Guru - He was a holy saint who lived in Kerala during 19th and 20th century, who played a significant role in the cultural renaissance of Kerala. He was born at a time when idol and temple worship were allowed only for Savarnas - It means only Brahmin/Nair/Menon Communities. OBC and dalits were not allowed to do so. He was born in Ezhava (OBC) community. As a spiritual guru, he taught us the principles of one God and equality among people. Yet he is famous for installing Siva's idol for lower caste people at Aruvippuram, TVM. When opposed by upper class, he replied, " I am installing Ezhavas' Shiva, not Shiva belonging to upper class people". It was one of the great reforms in Kerala during early 20th century.

But let me say, what's the sad climax of this story. Among religious saints from Kerala, his name is taken first who talk about one caste for human kind. Though his name is always taken with respect, he has become the trademark of a particular community of Kerala..... EZHAVA HINDUS. You can take any function of Ezhava Hindus, marriage, annaprasam, engagement or anything. No rituals of Ezhava community takes place without Narayana Guru's photo placed in front. His great spiritual leader's birthday and death anniversary are celebrated by only this community and they celebrate it by wearing full yellow dress. He is the guru of SNDP, the organization that belongs to this community.

i often feel sad, the man who preached great principles got constrained to a particular caste, community and religion. No other community, even Hindu talks about him like Ezhava community. The bitter truth is that he became the distinct trade mark of a particular community in Kerala. How it really happened???

I would like to know if any other religious saint from India exists, whose good principles later turned out to give such bad sequences.

Mostly it's the self styled religious leaders and the so called close associates of the Gurus are responsible for distorting the views of a particular guru with selfish motives. This trend in this segment is not new. Almost all the spiritual leaders indulge in this activity

Why, even Bhimrao Ambedkar might not have thought in his wildest of dreams that he will be considered leader of a particular party or worshiped as a God of a particular sect. But that is how all good things happen in this country. People create their own Gods and worship them. .

So is the case with many other saints philosophers in our country! After their demise, people only make use of their names claiming to be their rightful followers and worshipers but in reality they are doing it only for their selfish gains! Look at Sai Baba of Shirdi who laid an extremely simple life, almost a destitute and now his devotees are clamoring to heap crores of rupees upon his feet and cladding his shrine with gold and silver. He must be really tossing and turning in his place of rest!

Agree with you Kalyani..even I was about to write about Shirdi Sai Baba. In fact visiting Sai Baba has been turned into a business. People throng there in large numbers, donate huge amount of money, gold, even diamond. Also, some now are against the idea of worshipping him and also make claims and question to which religion he belong to. Sai baba never asked for such donations..he led his life by asking for alms, led a simple life.

Great people are those who think about the large masses and not just themselves.
