Is it the right way to protest?

'Protest against the rising 'intolerance' in the country'. Do you think it's the right way of these intelligent and intellectual people to  give back the awards and show their protest?

I definitely dont think so. An award is not defined by government and government changes every term. An award is defined by one's talent. Does it really signifies - an award got 10 or 20 years ago be returned to show protest now?  It could have worth if the award is given by present government.....

Protesting, no doubt is the Birth right of an individual in a secular country. But the protests should have a justified reason . The present ongoing protests against intolerance is nothing short of a political drama.

The motive behind these protest are aimed at maligning the ruling party. There is a particular section of the writers like Kamala Hasan are not returning their Awards.

I would say it's their prerogative. As people are saying that it's a plan to malign, if so then it's wrong but if that's not the case then they have all the right to show their protest. We would say that they can protest through their creation such as write-ups, plays or any other but the point is they are human beings and maybe they are scared of their lives. They chose a soft way to protest than by making loud protest through their creation which may have attracted more attention towards the intolerance issue. Though protest should be as loud as possible to create awareness, their method created more controversy.

Protesting for something you feel is unfair is the fundamental right of each citizen of this country. However, the basic thing that everyone must recognise is that the protest must be for the right reason and in the right manner. In this particular instance, both of norms are unfulfilled. These people are protesting for the alleged conditions that neither exist in India and never have done, except in the years of emergency when there was more intolerance than there is now. Also they are returning the awards which are not even given by the governments. So it really has turned into a nonsensical farce.

The protest is a symbolic one against the rising intolerance in the society. It began as a protest against the silence of Sahitya Academy who did not condemn the killing of their fellow writers. After a long silence, the Academy supported the writers by passing a resolution and asked the State Governments and the Centre to take suitable action on such issues. Further, other artists also started supporting the writers by returning their awards to the respective sources. It is a symbolic protest which proclaims that human life and freedom are more valuable than awards and recognitions. It doesn’t matter during which government's rule they received the awards.

Meanwhile, as usual, there is political fowl play by certain political parties by interfering and exploiting the situation to their favor. Whatever it may be, you have to accept the reality that intolerance exists and everyone has the right to react against it in one’s own way.

The writers are returning for cause. Apart from killing an innocent on mere rumour,  a number of writers have been killed for opposing superstition and promoting rational outlook. The communal tension is being aggravated by elements close to saffron group. There could be no other cause more worthy of protest.  There is no other way except returning awards to register protest.

I don't think it's right way of protesting as whatever brings the reputation down of our country should be branded as anti national act. There are hundred and one ways they can show their concern. Where are all these writers after the death of Col Mahadik or attack on Paris? This is clearly a case of sponsoring the agitation.
