Can jokes harm you?

It's true joke is a form of entertainment and also acts as a good medicine to our mental ailments. Very often our simple jokes may backfire us because of bad timing or the person at other end may not be humorous as we expect. Have you ever faced such experiences in life? Was you able to handle that unpredicted moment? Can you please share such a few experiences? It would be pleasant if we can laugh, though it was not the similar way when you have gone through the process?

There is a saying, " A smile is a curve that sets everything straight." I believe in this wise saying. Yes, there are limitations for this. If a Joke is cracked in proper time, it works like a miracle. And, if not ....... i shudder to think the the outcome, if a Joke is cracked in the wrong time. One should be wise enough ,to know when a Joke should be cracked and when it shouldn't.

One of my experience is, years ago, a friend cracked a Joke in a funeral ceremony. Need I say the repercussions of that badly timed Joke ?.

For everything there is a time and place. Wisdom lies in what is appropriate time.

Sandhya Rani very often small jokes can reduce the tension of high intense situation. It depends on common sense to identify the right person and situation. I have come across a few people who are interested in cracking jokes, but dont like others telling jokes. - Sandhya Rani - 8 years ago

Out of context jokes or jokes that are targetted at someone's weaknesses or disabilities are the kind of jokes that can hurt. There has to be a maturity on the kind of jokes one cracks and such jokes do not usually harm although it does depend on how one takes it, with a pinch of salt or as humiliating, depends from person to person.

Basically we all laugh at the joke when we see a person mocking or mimicking someone or making fun of others. Its funny for a person who has been not mocked or mimicked. For instance, if someone make fun of me, 10 people around me will laugh at that particular joke, however I will be not happy or will not find that joke as a funny thing to laugh.  Also it all depends to what extend someone is making fun of you.

A joke is a joke and normally everyone enjoys it except when you are the butt of that joke. However, it depends on the individual capacity, some are very sensitive , whereas some are open to any kind of jokes ..

Jokes can be used to lighten up a situation or the mood of people. It can be used to insult people, which is very wrong to do. Jokes must be made for fun.

Jokes come as an expression. It is a form of speech and so the freedom of speech can be brought into account here. And so this freedom will have responsibilities and limitations too. The speaker has to gaze and then use his freedom only if it does not violates his limitations. The content, sentiments, intention, tone and the timings will decide that limitation
