Actually God is one but our Hindu mythology has divided the forms of God according to their nature of work. Hence we call them by different names. We identify them by their different looks, etc.

There is only one God..the supreme..but like we have branches and segments of a tree..similarly , Gods have been designated to hold different positions and cater to us..human's needs and wishes...I am Hindu..so I can explain about Hinduism...We pray Lord Laxmi and Kubera for money...for education we pray Goddess Saraswati..for intelligence we seek the blessing of Lord Ganesha..and so on..Hence, we have to worship numerous Gods and Goddesses.

Humans are not sure, which god is more powerful and which god is capable of granting all the boons they demand. So they worship many gods with the hope one god or another will grant all that they demand from the god.
