The public sector kerala automobiles(KAL) received unexpected assistance from a team of mechanical engineering students from a college in trivandrum to redesign one of its three wheeler models.

The remodelling was taken by the students as a part of their project and work was done at KAL plant. The project involved the redesign of the chasis of the V_II 400 autorickshaw to achieve weight reduction and better convenience for passengers while getting on and off the vehicle.

The company has decided to accept the prototype developed by the students.

According to their calculations,KAL can save Rs.865 per vehicle on material cost alone.Taking the welding and electrical costs into account, each chasis works out to RS1500 less, translatinginto Rs.1 crore for the company.

The project has been gained attention nation wide.If it became a success in kerala , it may be applied throughout the country.
