SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR

INTRODUCTION:

Synchronous motors are those that run only at Synchronous speed ie.. constant speed.

It is also called as constant speed running motor.

OPERATION:

It works on the principle of “MAGNETIC LOCKING”. When two unlike poles are brought near each other, there exists a tremendous force of attraction between those two poles. In such condition the two magnets are said to be magnetically locked.

Therefore if one of the two magnets are rotated, the other also rotates in the same direction, with the same speed due to force of attraction ie.. due to locking condition.

APPLICATIONS:

Due to constant speed characteristics, it is used in variety of applications such as

· Machine Tools

· Motor generator sets.

· Synchronous clocks.

· Timing devices.

· Fans and Blowers.

· Centrifugal pumps and Vacuum pumps

· Textile and Paper Mills.

· Rolling and Cement Mills.

DISADVANTAGE:

The main disadvantage is they are costly and require frequent maintenance.
