alt          Toxicology

As all of us know every drug has its own side effect.

As there is increase in intake of more drugs there is also increase in adverse reaction of drugs we take.

Generally we see this condition more in elderly people than people will less age.

The drug which has got adverse reactions and interactions in elderly people is generally safe in younger people.

Drug has got adverse affect in elderly people because the liver function and renal function in them decreases when compared to younger people. As liver and kidneys are responsible for eliminating the waste products from body.

Due to increase in the body fat is also one reason for drug to react adversely and also because of decrease in the body water.

So the change in any of the above can lead to toxicology in elderly people.

If above are the main primary reasons for adverse reaction of drugs other secondary reasons are that as age increases elderly people vision also decreases so due bad vision they may end up taking more drug dosage.

Also during night times due to less dim vision they can’t read the dosage in right way and take more doses.

Other reason is as age increase very common condition we see is loss of memory so most of them take drugs more than one time thinking they didn’t take it.

So it is advised that if you have any elderly people at home to give them correct medications at correct time in correct doses.

If it is not possible for you to be all time with them keeping all the tablets which have to be taken near them.

Also put a board in front of dining table writing that not to forget to take medications after meals.

Always check for the expiry date of the drugs because they can’t read the smaller letters written on drug strips.

Respect elders, they are just like kids when they come to old age so don’t get irritated with there words or any gestures.

Take care of your health too J

Health is wealth

Thank you
