LAN stands for 'Local area Network'. It is network which interconnects multiple stations (ex. user or nodes) over a very small area is called LAN. Generally, LAN have users up to 100 only. LAN's are widely used in companies to connect several offices within the same building.

Multiple PC users can share expensive or limited use peripherals such as their hard disks, printers etc. One computer is set up as a controller through which othere users have acess to the peripherals. Such units are called 'Servers'. User may communicate with one another by E-mail system.
A connection from one LAN to another is called 'Bridge'. The three transmission media used in LAN are twisted pair, coaxial cable and fibre-optical cable. These are types of cables which is used for a data transmission. The LAN also permits software and data sharing. Data transmitted over a LAN is typically digital rather than voice or video.
