Different animals have different shapes and seizes. They live all over the world in water and on land. They even live inside the body of other animals. Bats, dogs, horses, kangaroos and moles are all animals. So are butterflies, frogs, jellyfish, pigeons and worms. Many are so small that we cannot see them. The biggest animal is the blue whale. It is about as long as five elephants in a row. Whales live in the ocean.

There are thousands and thousands of types of animals our world. About half of them are insects. Some animals provide us with food and clothing. Without animals we should not have such things as meat, honey, eggs, wool, leather or silk. Can you name anything else that animals give us?

From ancient times, people began to domesticate animals. Some of these animals provide food and clothing. For example, we get meat, milk and leather from cattle. Hens lay eggs.

Some animals help people in work. Bullocks and buffaloes pull ploughs in fields. We keep cats in our home to catch rats. Do you know how dogs are helpful to us?

Certain insects are also helpful. Bees make honey which is used as a nourishing food item. Bees also pollinate many food crops, including fruits and vegetables. Silk comes from fiber made by silkworms.

Some animals harm people. Animals like lions, tiger, and crocodiles may sometimes attack and kill people. Bites from poisonous snakes like cobra can cause death. Some animals spread disease. Certain mosquitoes transmit malaria and yellow fever.

Animals group

Animals grouped in many ways. They can be arranged according to whether they live on land or in water.

*Animals that live on land are known as terrestrial animals. Cats, dogs, lions are terrestrial animals.

*Animals that live in water are called aquatic animals. Fish is an aquatic animal.

*Some animals can live both in water and on land. They are called amphibians. Frog is an amphibian.

Animals can be arranged by the number of legs they have.

Dogs, frogs, and lizards have four legs. Bats and birds have two legs. Insects have six legs, and spiders have eight. Snakes and worms have no legs at all.

Some animals are warm blooded, and other is cold blooded.

Birds, mammals, and few types of fishes and insects are warm blooded.

All other kinds of animals are cold blooded.

Animals are also divided into groups according to whether they have backbones.

Animals having backbones are called vertebrates. Those who don’t have backbones are called invertebrates. Most of the animals are vertebrates.

Birds, fishes, mammals etc. are vertebrates. Insects, snails, worms, spiders etc. are invertebrates.

Where do they live?

Animals live in many kinds of places. The place where an animal’s life is called it is habitat.

Animals can be found everywhere on earth. They live on highest mountains and in the deepest oceans. They are found in the driest desert and wettest forests. They swim in freshwater and saltwater.

Dinosaurs

You might have seen a lizard walking through the walls of your room. They are called dinosaurs. They ruled our earth thousands and thousands of years ago. Dinosaurs were very huge creatures. They could be as high as five storey building. They were the largest land animals ever know.

Dinosaurs disappeared from the earth thousands and thousands of years ago. Then how do we know about them?

The remains of dinosaurs help us for that. Scientists have discovered their remains like bones and teeth. These remains are called ``fossils’’
