The sun, the planets, the satellites and number of invisible asteroids are together called solar system. Asteroids are also known as planetoids. The earth is one among the nine planets. The following terms give us an idea of solar system.
1) Milky Way: there are innumerable stars in the sky. All these stars are luminous. Some millions star from Milky Way. It is also called `Akasa Ganga’. Milky ways exits in the universe either separately or in groups of hundreds and thousands.
2) Planets: Planets are the celestial bodies that revolve round the sun. They are not self-luminous.but shine radiating the light received from the sun. There are nine planets in the solar system. they are :-
a) Mercury b) Venus c) earth d) marse) Jupiter f) Saturn g) Uranus h) Neptune and i) Pluto.
Pluto is the farthest from the sun and mercury is the nearest. Jupiter is the biggest while Pluto is the smallest planet in size.
3) Satellites: satellites are secondary bodies that revolve round the planets as planets revolve round the sun. Expect Venus and mercury all other planets have satellites. Moon is the satellite of the earth.
4) Meteors: meteors are small bodies coming from inter-planetary space. They are called shooting stars because they become luminous y friction on entering the earth’s atmosphere.
5) Meteorites: meteorites are larger meteors that reach the earth and become meteorites. All meteorites are meteors when in flight.
6) Comet: a comet is luminous celestial body which moves about the solar system in elliptical or hyperbolic orbits.
7) Stars: stars are –self luminous bodies situated at enormous distance from the solar system. There are millions of stars in the universe.
8) Constellations: a number of stars can be grouped together with an imaginary out line to match some human or animal figure. These groups of stars are called constellations.
9) Zodiac signs: the constellations in zodiac are called zodiac sings. There are 12 zodiac signs. They are 1. Aries 2 Taurus 3 Gemini 4 cancer 5 Virgo 6 Leo 7 Libra Scorpio 9 Sagittarius 10 Capricorn 11 Aquarius and 12 Pisces
