The following Effects are going to revolve around the following Original image and Threshold image !

Original image:

newyork_o

Effects with ‘Threshold’ option:

Open a new document with width-640px and height-200 px.

Open the required picture and drag it into the new document.

Duplicate the picture and hide the original picture. Make changes to the duplicate.

Select, Image menu > Adjustments>Threshold, and set the Threshold level at 75 so that you have a white background.

Threshold image:

Make sufficient copies of this for applying different effects. Do not use the same layer for all the below effects.

(A.) Combination of Gradient map on original image and threshold:

1.) Select the colored image and use the rectangular marquee selection tool and make selection on the colored image at width 3 inches using the ruler as reference.

2.) Apply, Image menu> Adjustments>Gradient map for first part-yellow, white, orange, blue gradient.

3.) Move the selection towards the right by selecting, SHIFT + Right Arrow and again fill the selection with Gradient map- violet, green, orange gradient and select reverse option.

4.) Follow the same procedure and use, blue, yellow, blue gradient for the remaining area.

5.) Now set the blending option for the colored layer as>blending>fill opacity- 43%( Right click layer and select Blending options)

6.) Set the mode for colored layer as- pin light.

You can see the required effect. See that the layers are in the order > Top-colored image with gradient effect, Below- Threshold effect image.

B.)Combination of Threshold and pattern file:

Final image:

ny2

This is a simple one with normal blending but works good with Threshold option .The following are the steps.

1.) Use another copy of threshold layer. For this you need a black background. Select, Image menu > Adjustments > Invert.

2.) Open a file with any pattern. I chose the pattern of a crack. Place this layer above the threshold layer. (Note that you have to use a fresh copy of the threshold layer as it as nothing to do with above method)

3.) Set the mode for the pattern as ‘darken’. See that the layers are arranged in the order > Top-pattern layer, below- Threshold layer (inverted one).

(C.) Combination of Threshold and original image with Gradient Overlay:

Final image:

1.) Take a copy of the original image and set the following Gradient overlay settings in Blending options.

Blend mode-normal, Opacity-100%, Gradient style- Dark spectrum, Style-Linear, Angle-90 degree, scale-100%.

The Blend mode for the image is Normal.

2.) NOTE: Place the Threshold layer on TOP of the image layer not below as in above methods.

Set the mode for Threshold layer as- Lighten.

(D.) Combination of Threshold with Gradient map and modified with Transform Tool and ordinary Threshold:

Final image:

1.) Have two Threshold layers (Note that this is not with inverted option but the original one.)Hide one and use the other to make changes.

2.) Use Transform Tool and select the option- Perspective. Click on the top right corner anchor point and drag towards the right. And scale to half of its original size.

3.) Make a copy of this half using CTRL + J and use the Transform Tool and select , Flip horizontal option and position it symmetrically.

4.) Now, merge both halves by selecting both layers and use merge layers option.

5.) Select, Image menu > Adjustments > and use Gradient map option and select the Gradient- Copper.

6.) Set the mode of this layer to ‘Hard Light’. Make the hidden Threshold layer visible and leave the mode to normal.

See that ordinary Threshold layer is at bottom and the one with Gradient is at Top.

(E.) Combination of Original image, Threshold layer, and Three Adjustment layers:

Final image:

ny5

Place the Threshold layer below, and original image on top of that and create adjustment layers on top of this in the following order.

1.) Create a new adjustment layer by selecting, Layer menu > New Adjustment layer > Hue and Saturation and set- Hue as +115, Saturation as +50.

Set the mode of this layer as ‘Normal’.

2.) Create another new adjustment layer by selecting, Layer menu > New Adjustment layer > Hue and Saturation and set- Hue as -29, Saturation as +50.

Set the mode of this layer as ‘Hue’.

3.) Create another new adjustment layer by selecting, Layer menu > New Adjustment layer > Hue and Saturation and set- Hue as -180, Saturation as +50.

Set the mode of this layer as ‘Difference’.

Similarly, you can combine differant options to get required effect.
