Are Our Degrees Becoming Mere Ornaments?
Education should be the bedrock on which we build our characters and which go into building the character of the nation. Looking at the present education scenario, we need to ask ourselves whether we have achieved in imparting that kind of value-based education to a large section of our populace. There has been great progress in setting up a number of schools, colleges and universities and the number of students from these institution who are completing their courses too has registered a steep rise. But has the quality kept up with the quantity. One of the great thinkers of our time even went to the extent of describing some of them as “ethical illiterates' and “moral idiots”. In the entire education process we spend just a part of our lives in schools,colleges and universities and our true education begins when we step out of the portal of these institutions. The role of these institutions is to arouse an intellectual curiosity which prepare us for further education in the field of life.
Education should not be a mere piece of ornament to decorate visiting cards and name plates. It should not be allowed to degenerate into a means of making money, rather it is an end in itself. Our teachers and educators should inculcate a sense in the minds of those whom they educate to be authentic, to be aware of their inner self. It is equally important, if we are to engage the large body of our youth power in the mission of nation-building , to teach them the necessity to keep away from trifling , small and destructive influences in life. We need education of the kind which helps them in discovering their vocation, calling, fate or destiny making them aware that life is too precious to be frittered away in internecine strife and discord or personal aggrandizement. . A person who receives true education is free from all blinkers of selfishness, egoism and pettiness. He transcends all barriers with great ease to emerge as a great human being – an asset for society.
