Education is essential to every man. An uneducated man loses much his life. But in developing and underdeveloped countries the percentage of educated people is still low. This is the main reason for their backwardness. India is one such country.

For a variety of reasons literacy in India is low. Before independence education was something only a few people could dream of schools were not in large numbers. Parents did not think it necessary to get their children educated. A large number of uneducated youth resulted. Even today the picture is not much changed. Today education has become costly and not all can afford to get their children educated. Thus even inn the early years of the 21^st century corers of people may remain uneducated.

This situation has to be set right. Education should be provided to everybody. Those who failed to receive it as children should get it is adults. This is where the concept of adult education comes in. Uneducated youth and even the old should understand that it is better to learn late than never. With this idea adult education programmers’ are launched.

Ours is a developing nation. Even after political independence we have not gained social and economic independence. To some extent this is due to illiteracy. Ours is a poor country. Many families depend on daily labor. Parents send their children to work. Thus children fail to have the much needed education. Because of illiteracy people have to suffer a lot in their life. An uneducated young man cannot get a good job and be comfortable in life. In day to day activities also he is troubled. He cannot read even the name plate pf a bus. So there is a great need for educating every one including the adults.

Adult education comes into picture in this regard. The program aims at educating adults who did not go to school as children. Such people can be educated only in their leisure. Night schools are opened for their convenience. Governments are setting up such schools all over country. Voluntary organizations, N.C.C and N.S.S are taking up this program on a large scale. Adults can be educated through the radio and T.V.Lions clubs are also participating in this activity.

Adult education should go to villages. It is in villages that large numbers of illiterates are present. They are being exploited by selfish people. The central government and all the state governments have taken up ‘Akshara Janna jyothi’ programs throughout the country to help such people. With all these efforts it is hoped that more and more adults will be educated.
