The pupils of a class were divided into five groups and taken to visit different places. They were asked to observe every thing carefully. After they returned, they were asked to share their experience with the other groups. Then they were asked to analyze the characteristics of orderliness.

The groups and the places they visited were as follows:-

Group A: vegetable, flower and fruit exhibition.

Group B: a pharmaceutical comp-any.

Group C: a public school.

Group D: a museum.

Group E: a local area with a multistoried building and a slum by its side.

The groups, accompanied by their respective teachers visited the places assigned to them. The children were happy and enthusiastic. They had many questions to ask and their doubts were cleared by their teachers and by the people who showed them around.

The next day, the groups were asked to share their experiences and then discussions followed:-

Leader of group A: it was really an exciting experience! The beauty of the vegetables, flowers and fruits, their orderly arrangement and classification was wonderful. The participants had taken pains to put up an excellent display. Various styles of flower arrangements were demonstrated. We learnt a lot. This experience will helps us to decorate the school and our homes on festive occasions. We were introduced to Bonsai and were given handouts on planting and growing a variety of plants. There were exotic fruits and vegetables not generally seen in our local markets. They had myriad of names to identify hem.

Leader of group B: we visited some important departments of some X laboratories. We were thrilled by the varieties of products hat are processed and packed. The entire manufacturing procedure had to be handled with great care. Even a minor error in the chain of possesses involved could create major problems. Unless orderliness is observed by each and every employee and at all leaves, managing such a large company would have been almost impossible. This experience taught us the principle of organizing everything in its proper order and sequence and keeping the right thing at the right place.

Leader of group C: we had been to a public school at Hyderabad. The diversity of activities in the school was indeed astonishing, everything spick and span-neat, tidy and clean. The school has a big library. There are many interesting books, periodicals and magazines for children. The reference library is well equipped and provides all the information needed for various projects at different age levels. The librarian is there to guide them. So the children take the books, refer to them with care and put them back where they belong. His shows in what an orderly manner the library is run. The librarian told us what care has to be taken, while handling the books that are, not to fold the book backward, not to run the edges of the page and not to make marking in the book.

The classrooms had different types of blackboards, with a thought for the day, date, subject neatly written. The garden was well developed and maintained. It was an enriching experience. We learnt how to arrange library books. We also saw higher class students performing experiments in the laboratory, the way they handled the apparatus and chemicals-using them carefully, cleaning them and putting them away properly in their respective places.

Leader of group D: our visit was to the museum and Hyderabad museum history society. The curator and his assistants told us about the cavitations with the help of the relics and artifacts of those times. They acquainted us with the skills with which the relics are minutely observed and how the findings are interpreted. We felt that history would be a lot more exciting and interesting if taught in this manner. The Hyderabad museum society’s exhibits were also wonderful there were a rich variety of animals and birds, classifieds, arranged and scientifically preserved. The experience taught us how orderliness is essential in the classification, strong and interpretation of information.

Leader of group E: our visit was to a local area. Oh, what a contrast! In the high –rise families. We had the opportunity of visiting their homes, replete with all the possible gadgets. Though we talked to them, they appeared somewhat reserved. On the other hand when we meet the children of the slums, they heartily welcomed us and took us to their homes. Some of the houses though very small were neatly kept. Some of them were very untidy. Some children were neat and tidy, others were not so. Many children, even below 14 were working and doing add jobs to earn some money for the family. When we were talking to them, me stressed the importance of cleanliness and education.

After all the group leaders presented their observations and experiences, they summed up their views as flows:-

  • orderliness is beautiful
  • attractive arrangement of flowers ob the table adds value to decoration
  • Orderliness in arranging scientific equipments in the laboratory and books in the library helps to locate the required material without waste of time. An orderly arrangement of the laboratory and library gives the institution an impressive appearance.
  • Orderliness in organizing source material makes the study of social studies and science more significant.
  • If children come to school neatly dressed, they add to the smart appearance of the school. Orderliness, in the form of neatness and tidiness, keeps the children disciplined and healthy.
  • Even a small house can be in order. Orderliness makes living comfortable, `Right thing in the right place’ helps one to find things easily. Thus accidents can be avoided.
  • Orderliness has to be cultivated in personal habits, at home, at school in all our activities.

on completing the discussions, the class disperse with a great sense of satisfaction and joy of achievement.
