Osmosis Osmosis is a process of movement of solvent molecules from the region of higher concentration to lower concentration. Take a thistle funnel, the mouth of the thistle funnel is covered by parchment membrane. Concentrated sugar solution is placed inside the thistle funnel and level is marked. Then thistle funnel is placed in a beaker containing pure water. After few hours raise in the level of sugar solution in the thistle funnel is noticed due to entry of water into the thistle funnel through parchment membrane water entered into the thistle funnel generates hydrostatic pressure and press the parchment membrane. The membrane is bulged. No more water can enter the internal pressure developed now is called osmotic pressure which will prevent further entry of water. Potato Osmoscope :The osmotic entry or exist of water can be recorded to it is called potato osmoscope. The potato surface serves as a semi - permeable membrane. Potato skin is peeled off. The bottom is made flat. A central cavity of potato and level is marked. Mouth of the cavity is closed by one hole rubber stopper. A glass tube is inverted through the hole and end should dip the sugar solution. The potato is placed in a small beaker containing water. After sometime raise in level of sugar solution is noticed.
