Courage
Socrates was great philosopher. He had no fear about on death.
`` I am a dog chasing ignorance’’, Said an ugly man who roamed in the streets of Athens barefooted. Yet, the rules of Athens trembled at the mere name of the man. He was Socrates.
One day, he read a notice that said Socrates was a criminal. It is his crime? He had encourages the son of a trader to study philosophy. The punishment for this was death. Socrates was seventy years old at that time. He laughed and said, ``I have faced life with courage. I will face death also with the same courage. ``saying this, Socrates drank a full of cup poison. He died but his courage taught others a lesson. Everyone remembers Socrates.
We also remember other men of great courage. Who have explored, discovered and invented, in order to make our world a better place to liven in. Had it not been for the courage and tenacity of such men, we might still be living in caves!
These were men with exceptional courage, because in spite of knowing that they could lose their lives, they still set out to walk into thick jungles, and sail over unknown seas. What a great deal of hardships and difficulties they must have had to encounter! They were able to overcome these because of their determination and courage.
Even today, men continue to display their fearlessness. Brave men dive into the depths of the oceans to travel the mystery of the deep. The fly into outer space, knowing that they may never return, and then there are those who are willing to lay down their lives in the service of their country.
We read early that courage must not be confused with strength. It has nothing to do with the physique. A thin and slight person can posses much more courage than a strong and well-built person.
Courage is found in the minds and hearts of men. Powerful and cruel rules have been topped by tiny men. Frail social reformers have brought great changes in society.
