The most important invention of science is the Television, in short known T.V. It is often referred to as the 'idiot box'. Then why do we accept it as an important invention. The term 'idiot box'. is relative to the watchers and his purpose. If a person neglects his duty and watches the television just to pass time, then the 'idiot box' is the right name for it. Television has become part and parcel of modern life. It is accepted as the common form of entertainment and because of the appeal to the eye as well as ears, colours, music, songs, dances, powerful stories and the art of histories, T.V. has become a very powerful medium of mass communications and entertainment. Different programmes can be used for providing education and healthy entertainment for the masses. History, Geography, Science and any other subjects, skills and new techniques can be effectively taught through lively demonstration and learning becomes fun. Moreover T.V. can teach and reach informations to thousands or even lakhs of people at a time - a thing no teacher or newspaper can do. As T.V. has a powerful influence, it is also used to promote different products, through colourful advertisements with a touch of imagination, to provide information about new products. It also arouses people to interact with various developments and projects and secure their co-operation and participation in them. It is used to create public awareness against many social evils and outdated customs. This is only the bright side of the picture. Now let us turn one eye to its dark aspects. It is said that every rose has its thorn. It is so painful to note that this 'small screen' or 'small box' called T.V. has become a money making racket. The programmes and advertisements telecast, show that the producers only worship money and pay little attention to the ethical side of the programme. Modern programmes have polluted the minds of the young generations, unhealthy feelings and thoughts have corrupted their minds. They have lost the power to distinguish between good and bad. They live in a world of make believe. Charmed and deceived by the glamour of this 'small box' young and immature people become T.V. addicts and fans of various T.V. serials and programmes. They have no time for friends and relatives. They easily fall a prey to modern fashions. The presence of vulgar songs and vulgar scenes have completely changed the outlook and character of the young generation. It is high time that the T.V. industry wake up from thier slumber and try to discourage the producers and advertising agencies who produce such programmes and advertisements which sow the seeds of immorality in the minds of the young generation, the future citizens of our country. The children of today are the administrators of tomorrow, so care should be taken to infuse in them the spirit of sacrifice, hard work, honesty, selfless service and good conduct. T.V. programmes should be classified into different categories, instructive, social, moral and amusing. So that people may be entertained according to their taste. In conclusion, we can say that T.V. in itself is no bad. It is an easy source of entertainment, which even a poor man of today can afford to seek. It can do a lot of good to the people at large if better and clean programmes are been telecast.
