Evolution of Icecreams:

Icecreams as a dairy delight was discovered in China in the Tang period A.D 618-907. Buffalo, cows and goats' milk was heated and fermented to mix with yogurt and flour for thickening. Knowledge of icecream came from China through Europe and then to Italy. Legends also say Persians discovered icecreams.

The freezing technique used earlier was a bit complex. Ice was cut from lakes and ponds and stored in wooden barges and stored in ice houses. They could then use them in summer as well. Icecream was made manually in a large bowl kept in salt and ice. Mixing salt and ice reduces the freezing point to achieve a temperature below -14C. They did not use ice in their drinks as the ice was not good. So instead people used it to cool them.

Icecream began to appear in the American colonies during the first half of the 18th century.Geroge Washington acquired a ice machine and recipes in 1784. Thomas Jefferson was said to be the one who wrote the first French Vanilla icecream recipe.

How did the name Icecream originate?

Icecream was made with ice and frozen cream. So the term ICED CREAM came into existence which is simlar to iced tea. This was later abbriviated to Icecream.

New Establishments:

In 1843 Nancy Johnson invented the ice making machine which was a wooden bucket which contained ice and salt for freezing. Inside the wooden bucket was the icecream made. The wooden bucket consisted of a crank which when rotated , it churned and soft and creamy icecream was made. That was made available to customers and it started became popular among all.

Later in 1850 Jacob Fussell  a dairyman from Baltimore opened the first commercial icecream factory. Fussell became the father of wholesale icecream industry by selling his icecreams in Baltimore .

It was then in the 20th century that icecreams boomed sale with the advances of refrigeration and power. So no longer was ice to be stored in icehouses. Icecream cone was an American invention. Today we have varieties , lots of flavors and mixtures and combinations to lick from. So guys now that you know the history go get an icecream this summer. Its too hot here. Am going to grab one from the nearby parlor....
