Surgery has been practiced in India since ancient times. Surgery is the art of curing the disease by removing or repairing a part of the body. To day surgery is carried out with the help of electronic instruments and machines. Operation on delicate parts such as the heart, brain, kidney and lungs can be performed successfully. Damaged organs like the kidneys and heart cab be removed and replaced by a healthy one.
Chloroform is colorless liquid which when inhaled brings about unconsciousness. It was for the first time used by James Simpson as an anesthesia. It was given to the patients before a surgery so that they do not feel the pain drug the surgery.
Although chloroform reduced the surgical pain but half the patients died due to infection of wounds. Joseph Lister discovered that carbolic acid can be used in operation theatres to kill the germs. This chemical did not injure body tissues. He started the practice of sterilization of surgical instruments. During sterilization, instruments are cleaned in boiling water to make them free from germs.
Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered. It was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928. Antibiotics are drugs which check the growth and spread of germs. Diseases like malaria, cholera, etc. can be he cured with antibiotics.
