Parenting is an art in itself, especially for the first time parents. Every experience is new for them and it is the first time for them to go through it all. Taking care of the baby is quite a demanding job and it can be experienced only when one becomes a parent for the first time.

The days can be easy at times, but the nights can be really tough. At times it is difficult to make a baby sleep at night. The problems can be many varied and so can be the reasons. For the first time parents, it becomes difficult to make out what the problem for their new born could be.

However, if there is someone to guide through, life certainly becomes easier. But knowing some tips can also come in handy. Here are some tips for the parents to help their little ones to a better night’s sleep.

The first and foremost thing is that babies will invariably keep waking up at night. So, parents must remember that no tip will work universally. New born babies need healthy diet regularly, which also helps them gain weight. When babies do this regularly, parents will get concerned over making their babies fall asleep during the night.

For their feeding sessions, the babies will get up during the night and will make it a routine overtime. But parents need not be very concerned about this as waking up during the night is just the order of the day. However, if you are able to chalk out a certain pattern during the first one year after the baby’s birth, you will get an idea of the schedule when your baby needs to wake up. And you can then manage accordingly.

Some babies tend to wake up just too frequently. That is really not the problem, though. The real test lies in making the baby go to bed again. A therapy developed by Dr. Harvey Karp is very beneficial. Dr. Karp suggests the “Five S’s” to overcome this tricky situation.

“Sucking” is the first of those “S”, where a baby is permitted to suck to a pacifier or a bottle. The second “S” is “Swinging”. The swinging motion can really calm the baby down faster. A baby carrier can come in handy. Or you can even sway the baby in your arms too.

The third “S” refers to “Shushing”.  The shushing sound is pretty familiar to the babies as they connect it to that of their mother. This is the sound that they always feel when inside the womb of their mothers. The fourth “S” stands for “Side”. Most of the babies will find it very comfortable when they doze off on their side, especially the left side. Parents can always get them back to a safe sleeping posture, when the baby falls fast asleep.

The last “S” talks about “Swaddling”. This is the practice of wrapping a baby tightly in a soft blanket. This takes the baby back to the days, when he was in the safest place in the world – the womb of its mother. The realization of such safety can better help the baby in sleeping during the night time.
