Hi friends, through this article, I would like to share with you about DRUG MENACE.

Psychological and physiological dependence of a person to the intake of a particular drug is called Drug Addiction. Drugs can be classified into three types:

1. Sedatives: Sedatives are drugs which affect the mid-brain of a person as a result of which the person becomes less interested in the surroundings. These drugs create a feeling of tension, fear and anxiety to a large extent. E.g., Morphine, Barbiturates.
2. Narcotics: It is a drug or a chemical which depresses the activity of the central nervous system. E.g., Marijuana, LSD.
3. Stimulant: It is a drug or a chemical that increases the activities of the nervous system. Caffeine in coffee and Theo bromine in tea, act as stimulants. Some drugs are taken by athletes, sportsmen and players to stimulate them and give more energy for playing.

These abusable drugs, apart from health and physical deterioration, have also led to an increase in crime rate. A drug addict would stop at nothing to get a dose of drug. Drug addiction is also one of the causes for the spread of AIDS. Drugs are accepted sometimes by children under group pressure. Some children accept it due to a feeling of neglect by the parents.

To curb drug abuse, the government has passed many Acts. The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 was passed to punish drug users and sellers.

De-addiction and De-toxification centres and voluntary associations have enabled us to save many drug victims from death and destruction. Mass media such as Radio, T.V and Newspapers are of great help to educate the people about the ill effects of the drugs. All the children and as well as adults should remember the slogan,

” Drug is death; say NO to drugs!”

I would be happy that many of you friends spread awareness about drug addiction to whom so ever who know and play a vital role in curbing drug addiction!
