BACK PAIN

Introduction:

In today’s fast moving world, maintaining a good health is quite a difficult task.Amongst the various health problems, back pain is one of the commonest.
Let us consider the general construct of the back. Our back is made up of small bones called vertebrae. These small bones are together stacked to form a column, with a cushion like structure called disc, in between each vertebrae. They are held together with ligaments and muscle like structure called tendons.Opening in each vertebrae line up to creates a hollow canal like structure. The spinal cord, which extends from the brain to various parts of the body and which is one the most important human organs, passes through this canal. From the spinal cord, nerves branch out to various organs through the spaces between the vertebrae.

Depending on the anatomy, back pain can be divided into the following types:

•Neck Pain - It may be caused due to muscular tightness in neck and upper back or pinching of nerves coming out of cervical vertebrae.
Upper Back Pain - It is felt between the bottom of the neck and top of the lumbar spine. The common causes are poor posture, injuries due to  overuse,or other accidental injuries.
Lower Back Pain - It is the most common and caused due to musculoskeletal problems or due to muscle sprain during physical loading of the back.
Tailbone Pain - It is also called coccydynia and usually caused due to sitting abruptly, improperly or straining the coccyx.

Most of the body weight is held by the lower back. Thus, even a minor problem with bones, muscles, ligaments or tendons in this area can cause severe pain while doing any physical movement.
In spite of various technical advances, the exact cause of back problems can be found on very few people. At most times the symptoms are blamed on muscle tension, back sprain, ligament tear or joint problems.
Sometimes buttock pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in leg can be related to “slipped” disc, which irritates or pinches the nerve from the spinal cord.
The most common sufferers are those who have a poor working condition or whose work involves heavy labor, long period of sitting or standing. Not only they are at greater risks but they also take more time to get better. Mental stress or long period of inactivity makes the condition worse.

Remedies and Treatment:

A person need not see a doctor right away if he develops a mild low back discomfort and if the symptoms go away within few days. However, a visit to a health care provider is necessary than beneficial if symptoms are severe and persist for a longer duration.
The main goals while treating back pain are to maximize the reduction in pain intensity as rapidly as possible and to restore the person’s ability to function in everyday activities.
Applying hot or cold packs to the effected area can be a great help. One can also use creams, lotions or gels containing painkillers or anti-inflammatory substances. If the pain is chronic or severe stringer medicines prescribed by a physician can be used. However, these aren’t suitable for all and can be addictive and cause side-effects. In such cases, physical therapies can be a great help. Back surgery is considered as the last resort if the pain persists and is related to a specific cause.

Prevention:

Risk of getting back pain can be easily reduced if one takes a good care of his back.

One should do the following for reducing risk of back pain:

•Exercise regularly-swimming and yoga are great options.
•Minimize your stress level
•Stay active-taking lot or rest may worsen the problem
•Try not to bend your back-bend your knees and hips instead.
•Try to maintain a good proper posture.

Remember that you are the most important person in taking care of your back.
