In vasthushastra the second most important space of a home is bedroom. Obviously first preference is for kitchen. Vasthushastra has given a few suggestions for bedroom in order to attain good sleep. The place of bedroom, size and direction of sleep – all are significant. A few do’s and don’ts are also told in vasthushastra. Through this article let me give you a few vasthu suggestions to get good sleep.

South – west direction is the best place to get good sleep

According to vasthu, the master bedroom of your home should be in south-west corner. It gives good sleep. If not, second best is north-east corner. So, according to vasthu kitchen should never come in south-west direction.
According to Charaka and Sushrutha, ancient Ayurvedic physicians when you prepare a room for a patient for his treatment, it should be in south-east direction. If so, treatment will be more effective. In Kerala, kitchen is placed in south-east corner while it is used for constructing bedrooms or pooja rooms in North India.
It’s written in Brihat Sanhita of Varahamiharan that no obstacle should disturb our sleep. So, through suggestions for good sleep both shastra and safety join hands in hands.

A little matter in distance

  • Bedroom should be distant from store room. The distance should be arranged in accordance with the total size of your home. Store room contains a lot of dust, waste and less used items that can cause allergy and asthma. Also, as storage space is used to store grains and other food materials a lot of pests, rats and worms will be there. It may be written in old times keeping in note the fact that snakes may come to store room of dumped wastes to eat rats.
  • Cow shed, pet house, coop and similar places used for keeping pets should never come near your bedroom. Bad smell and mosquitoes from cow shed can take away your sleep. Mosquitoes can give you diseases too. Dust particles from coops and love bird cage can cause allergy and respiration problems. Also sound of such animals and birds may disturb your sleep at night.
  • Bedroom should be away from kitchen too. Sound from kitchen caused due to utensils, mixer, grinder etc can affect your sleep adversely. Smoke and odours are other reasons.
  • Keep distance from drunkards and worship room too. It’s better to build bedroom away from your room of worship. It’s also believed that spiritual and divine power of god should never be present in the room where you have chosen for sleep. It can disturb your sleep. It’s particularly applicable for couples.     
  • You should remove plants from interior and edges of your home. Indoor plants emit carbon dioxide at night – the most annoying factor to disturb one’s sleep. Your room should be away from plants – particularly bamboo. According to ayurveda bamboo belongs to high intense grass whose presence can adversely affect both mind and body.

Sleep, head pointing east or south

  • It’s told in Varahamihira that north and west are not suited for sleeping. Never sleep pointing your head towards these directions. If you choose a direction against magnetic field and intensity of your body, it can affect your sleep equally. Also, when you sleep pointing your head towards north it affects blood circulation of brain. According to Sushrutha, those patients affected with brain diseases should be treated by pointing their heads towards south. So, it’s always a better idea to sleep, pillow placed in east or south directions to guard both your physical and mental health.
  • Avoid computers, televisions and other electric/electronic appliances in your bedroom. In case you need to afford such devices in your bedroom, pull off the cable wire and cover them using cotton sheets or blankets. Avoid charging of electric equipments too, including your mobiles, UPS and charger lights. They emit negative energies, very harmful to health. It causes disturbances to your sleep as well.
  • According to vasthu small bedroom with a bed is best to get good sleep than filling a big room with shelves and a lot of decorative items. Keep your bathroom door closed always. In old houses, bathrooms and toilets were provided separately as they bring negative energy.
  • Never sleep nude – says Varahamihiran. If you sleep undressed, mosquitoes and house flies can attack you easily. They can cause disturbance to your sleep as well.
  • When you arrange bedrooms for other members, it should be kept away from old members of the home. Old people sleep less. It causes disturbance to others’ sleep. That’s the reason why Vasthu experts insist so.
  • Any quick action to bring sleep to your eyes adversely affects your health and body; taking sleeping pills and dipping legs in cold water for instance. Vasthushastra has given importance to this fact too.

Natural sceneries and light blue colour for your bed room

According to vasthu experts, pictures placed inside the bedroom can deeply influence the nature and characters of persons, who use that room. It can affect the mental status and mood of the person too. You should place only pleasing pictures in your bed room like natural scenery, romantic scenes, pictures of kids or pictures giving moral lessons. A ship in storm or a crying baby never suits your bedroom. Pictures showing quarrels, death and war between good and evil bring only restlessness and bad thoughts to human minds.

Vasthushatra has given a few suggestions regarding the colours to be chosen for your bedroom. Sky blue colour is best for bedroom. Vasthu suggests avoidance of colours yellow and red, anywhere inside the home.

Though a few people ignore these facts assuming them to be superstitious, they can't deny the fact that those factors I have mentioned whole through the article can affect you and your health and can be proved scientifically.
