The frogs and the boys
A group of boys were playing near a pond. After a while they got bored. They picked up some stones and began to throw them into the pond. Stone after stone hit the water.
Now a family of frogs lived in the pond. They were very frightened. The stones fell dangerously close to them. Father frog said to the family, ``we have got to do something to save ourselves. Let me talk to the boys.
Father frog swam to the edge of the pond and said, `please stop throwing stones into pound. You might hurt us.’ The boys just laughed and continued to throw stones into the pond.
A farmer was watching. He picked up a few small stones. He began to throw them, one at a time, in the direction of the boys.
``Stop, stop!’’ cried the boys. ``Can’t you see you may hurt us?’’
``Why should I stop?’’ replied the farmer. ``Did you stop when you knew that you might hurt the frogs?’’
The boys felt ashamed and walked away.
Who will bell the cat?
A farmer once bought a house. It was an old house. Nobody had lived in for a long time.
The farmer and his wife went to live in the house. They found that the house was full of mice. There were so many mice; they ate all the rice and all the wheat.
So the farmer bought a cat. It was a big cat, and it was good at killing mice. The mice began to get worried because many of them were dying every day.
One day the mice got together. They held a meeting. `We must do something,’ they said. `Every day the cat is killing so many of us.’
`What can we do?’ one mouse said. `He walks so silently that we don’t hear him coming behind us’.
`I will tell you what we should do,’ another mouse said. `We should tie a bell round his neck. Then we will know where he is.’
`Good idea!’ a third mouse said. `We must tie a really big bel.’
All the nice were happy because they had found the answer to their problem. They laughed and clapped and cheered.
Then a wise old mouse said, `It is a very good idea. But who’ll tie the bell round the cat’s neck? Who will bell that cat?’
Nobody had an answer. The meeting ended suddenly.
That night all the mice left the house. Nobody ever saw a mouse in that house after that.
Assam state tea taste
Do you know where Assam is? It is in the north –east of India. It has big rivers, blue hills, and thick forests. The mighty Brahmaputra flows through Assam. Many wild animals live here and different kinds of plants and trees grow here.
Assam is famous for its tea, oil, silks and national parks. National parks are large areas of forestland. The government looks after these areas and you can visit them to see wild animals and rare plants. The Kaziranga national park is a world famous wildlife sanctuary. Rhinoceroses, elephants, leopards, and the Indian bison are some of the animals you can see in Kaziranga. You can travel in an open jeep, a car, or a minibus into the forest to see these wild animals. If you like, you can travel on an elephant’s back!
Assam is a land of festival. Bihu is a famous Assamese festival. It is celebrated in the month of April. People from all religions take part in the celebrations, which go on for a month. Young men and women wear gold colored silk dresses and perform a special dance called the Bihu dance.
Boat races are held during Bihu. Many teams take part in the races, and lots of people watch them from the rivers banks.
Cloths
Have you thought about the cloths we wear?
They can tell people many things about us. They can shoe others what work we do. They can make us look beautiful or plain. They can make people want to know us.
For many kinds of work, people wear special cloches. Sportspersons need clothes that are light and easy to move in. that is why cyclists, tennis players, and footballers wear shorts, and swimmers wear swimsuits. Some people do dangerous work and so they need to wear special clothes. For example, people wear helmets when they work in dangerous places like mines where things may fall on their brown in color? The reason is it not easy to see these colors in open land. Soldiers try not to be seen because powerful guns can easily hit them even when they are far away.
Do you wear a uniform when you go to school? When people wear special clothes that look the same, these clothes become a uniform. Uniforms make group of people look different from one another. Soldiers, policemen, watchmen, nurses, and air hostesses all wear uniform. A policeman too is known by his uniform. Will you notice a policeman if he is wearing ordinary clothes?
