Long distance relationship

I FOUND OUT HOW COUPLES LIVING APART MAKE THEIR RELATIONSHIP WORK

How often have you made the late night STD/ISD calls that make you lose count of minutes? Or how often have you rushed to the nearest cyber café for a much awaited e-mail and then thought long and hard, with your heart of course, to reply to the same.

Yes, it’s about maintaining relationship with your lover, who lives hundreds/thousands of miles away that we are talking about. While maintaining such relationships is no easy task, they certainly have a charm that nothing can match.

Geeta, a final year engineering student, met that ‘special someone’ on the internet. She fondly recollects, “He was in Nagpur at that time and used to chat online for hours. Since both of us are Maharashtra’s, we shared a great comfort level. It was two years before we actually met in Mumbai! From then, we started talking everyday over phone and it’s been smooth sailing.”

There are also cases of childhood sweethearts being forced to live in different cities but managing to keep romance alive. Ask Prem , a 26-year-old professional with a popular retail outlet, who tells us, “I fell in love with her when we were both in seventh standard. Till 2003, I didn’t have a cell phone and used to send her letters and greeting card every week. Right now, she is in Hyderabad and met last month after almost five years! But if you trust your partner, distance doesn’t matter at all. Besides, when you meet up after so long, it’s that much more special.”

Apart from phone calls and emails, there are other interesting aspects as well which add to that ‘X’ factor. Anil 25, a central government employee whose girlfriend is in Bangalore, says, “My girlfriend is pursuing her graduation. I last met her in 2007. We do talk every day, but apart from that, there are a few things that we religiously follow. For instance, whoever gets up first in the morning, gives a missed call that has to be answered once the other person gets up. The same routine is followed while going for lunch. It’s good fun. She gets very worried if the routine is disturbed, “he says.

But given that they are not able to meet for such long periods, do feelings of insecurity ever creep in? Arul, 25, a mechanical engineer who has been committed to his girlfriend for the last eight years, doesn’t agree, “She is also my good friend and I know she will always be very honest with me.” Agrees Jalapa, “Such problems arise only if your partner is not as committed as you are. But in such a case, you can easily figure out if you get cold vibes.”

Well, as they say, the beauty of love lasts a lifetime. So, distance is hindrance, really!!!!!!!!
