Dignity of labor
The dignity of labor makes one realize that every individual can contribute his or her share of work for the betterment of the society. A person, who has dignity of labor, will enjoy and take pride in his work, no matter of that kind it is. The attitude of such people gives inspiration to others to develop respect for all types of work.
To day, we find that many people have no work to do. They consider doing certain kinds of work below their dignity. The attitude of such people not only makes them ideal, lazy and frustrated but also adds to the problem of unemployment in our country. Contempt for manual labor only shows false and foolish pride. No work is big or small. It is only our attitude which makes it look big or small. Only the real lo9ve for the dignity of labor will enable our nation to achieve prosperity.
Abraham Lincoln was the son of a farmer. He lived in a log cabin. He used to work with his farther in his fields. He cut the grass even and never hesitated. Abraham Lincoln rose from a penniless boy to become the president of the United States of America.
When the king Yudhishtira performed the ``Rajsuya Yajna’’, Lord Krishna without any hesitation performed the task of keeping the shoes of the guests in the proper place.
Mahatma Gandhi was a shinning example of the dignity of labor. He did sweeping, scavenging and cleaning in his ``Ashram’’ in Wardhan. He never felt degraded and insulted in doing the jobs that some people consider inferior or menial. He even used to clean his own toilet.
George Washington came down of his horse and without saying a word, joined the soldiers in pushing the log. And the log rolled down. The soldiers thanked this unknown person.
The sergeant felt curious about this man. He asked, ``who are you/ you look a man of status. Why did you help these soldiers/ it was their job and such labor was below the dignity of a man like you.’’
Washington gave reply, ``Sir, my name is George Washington. I am your general you thought that this job was below your dignity. I shall only say that if you ever need such help you can send for me. ``The sergeant trembled with fear. All of them saluted the general, who smiled at them.
You must remember that God loves all those who learn their living by the sweat of their brow. You must show love and concern for the persons who help you, such as cobblers, washer men, potters, carpenters, blacksmith, coolies, maid-servants, rickshaw-pullers, weavers, sweepers, etc.
