*National flag

National flag Indian has three colors. All the three color bans are of equal width with saffron color at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom. At the center of the white band is a wheel in blue color. It is Dharma chakra with 24 spokes of Emperor Ashoka’s Pillar at Sarnath. The ratio of the width of the flag t its length is 2: 3. The flag is unfurled on all national occasions. The flag always flutter atop the government buildings. The white color band symbolized peace; the saffron color band symbolizes bravery and sacrifice; while the green color band symbolizes prosperity.

*The seal of India

This is replica of top part a column of emperor Ashoka’s pillar at Sarnath. The pillar has four lions carved out; but only three lions are visible on the seal. Below the seal, there is an inscription in Devanagari which reads, `Satyameva Jayate’ (truth alone triumphs). Above this inscription, there is a wheel, on both sides of which there is a figure of a bull and horse.

*National anthem

`Jana Gana Mana’ is the national anthem of India. The poem has five stanzas but only the first stanza is recognized as the national anthem. This is written and composed by poet Rabindranath Tagore.

*National song

`Vande Mataram’ writer by Bankingchandra Chatterjee is recognized as the national song of India. It has been taken from Bankingchandra’s novel `Anand Math’. Thousands of people were inspired by this song. It was like a clarion call of freedom fighters.

*National calendar

The government of India adopted in 1957 a national calendar based on the Saka era with Chaitra as its first month and a normal year of 365 days. The dates of this calendar have a permanent correspondence with the dates of the Gregorian calendar, Chaitra 1 falling on March 22 normally and March 21 in a leap year. The months in the national calendar are; Chaitra, Vaishaka, Jaistha, Ashadha, Sravana, Bhadrapada, Aswina, Kartika, Margshirh, Pausha, Maga, and Phalguna.
