METHODS OF STORAGE OF FOOD:
DRY STORAGE:
The storage of food materials at room temperature is called as dry storage. This method of storage is for perishable food materials like wheat, rice, sugar, pulses etc.
Cold storage:
The storage of food materials at a low temperature is called as cold storage. This method is used for perishable food materials like fruits and vegetables.
METHODS OF PROTECTION:
sun drying:
Sun drying is one of the oldest method of preserving food. Drying means removal of water from the food. Since most of the water is removed from the food , the microbes cannot survive, so they die due to lack of water.
Pickling:
The fruits like raw mango, lemon, almaetc. are  made into pickles by the additon of common salt or vinegar. Here the salt is added and so water is drained due to the process of osmosis. since water is drained out the microbes cannot survive.
Deep freezing:
In deep freezing food is preserved at a very low temperature where the food gets frozen. So the microbes as they cannot live in low temperature
canning:
Here the food is heated to a high temperature to kill the microbes and spores. these food are canned in air tight containers. So the nutritional value of food is retained.
pasteuraization:
Milk is a heated to a high temperature of about 70degree celcius and suddenly cooled to 10degree celcius. This treatment of milk destroys most of the microbes
curing:
salt or smoke is used to remove water and kill microbes. During smoking, the food is held over a wood fire. This kills the bacteria and gives a delicious taste.
