ORKUT

Orkut is a social networking site and is the most popular among the Indians. This was started a few years ago. This site was developed by Google, and Gmail account works here also. This site sends  an activation link to the G-mail account and once we click on it,our account is activated. When we sign in, the first thing to do is enter our complete profile. The contact link is used to enter our contact information such as our E-mail ID. The last link, professional, lets us key in information about your professional life. In our profile, we can decide on the information fields that should be visible only to us, our friends or the general public.

The next thing to do is to upload our photos on the site, so that people can see how good he look! Similar to our profile, a photo definitely makes a difference in catching anyone's attention. We should upload short videos of ours on this site, either by Orkut or Google video or YouTube. To start interacting with people, we can search the people and write in their scrapbook, or else we can join a community. There are all sorts of communities out there having people with common interests such as entertainment, sports, health, literature, technology, computers and what not. This could enable us to build a social circle.

We can build our own social circle by inviting people to our own events. If we are in a hurry, we can even mark them as favorites or our crushers and contact them later. This is similar to bookmarking in a web browser. There is also provision of blogging in this website. People can respond to our blogs and also we can respond to their blogs.

Orkut is a must-sign-up-for site if we want to be visible in the online social networking circuit.

MYSPACE

MySpace is yet another popular social networking site on the Internet. This site, like Orkut offers the facilities to socialise, to make friends and join communities of people who share similar interests. The signup is the same a the Orkut account , once we get started they too send an activation code to our Gmail account and the next things are the same as Orkut. In the personal info tab, there are several links.

We can enter our hobbies by clicking "interests and personality". The basic info to enter our E-mail are also available. In the name section, we can enter our full nomenclature. On the schools page, we can enter the name of the institutions where we studied. On the companies page, we can enter the details of the companies where we work. On the networking page, we can see our friends, while on the "Song and Video" page, we can upload songs which we may have sung and the videos about ourselves. The next tab after the personal info tab is the , where we can see a list of groups that we are the moderator of and on the comments tab we can see the comments people have posted on us.

Before uploading the videos it is recommended that we upload our photos and also our experiences and short stories in MySpace too. Also, Forums are more of a discussion on various topics, while blogs are places of description of ourselves to others. In MySpace, however blogs and forums are relatively similar. This site provides people with audio entertainment in the form of music and songs as well. This site also has a high ranking.

FACEBOOK

Facebook is yet another social networking site on the Web. The name, as we gather, means a book of faces or a collection of faces. Just like Orkut and MySpace, this site also offers the facilities to meet people, make friends and socialise on the Web.

As in the earlier cases, to get started we have to signup. Click on the activation link that Facebook sends to our Email account and follow the three steps that ensue. Step one does a search for friends from our Email address book who are already on Facebook . Step Two is to enter the name of our school, university and company so that Facebook can search people from those Institutions who are already on Facebook. Finally enter our country name and we are through.

The next procedures are as the same as Orkut and MySpace and we complete our profile. We move on to the personal page to enter our interests and hobbies and our favourites. We should specify our Education and work details in the next two pages and then proceed to upload our photos onto this site. Facebook offers us the same plethora of features that MySpace and Orkut do. Once done with our personal details, we can make friends by searching and messaging them or joining groups of like-minded people.

On Facebook, we can post comments on people's walls. This is called newsfeed and there is a separate page reserved for newsfeed in our area on this site. This is somewhat different from blogging or forums, but similar in the sense that we can post our reply to these newsfeeds. In addition we can add photos or videos. We can upload videos up to 100MB in size. We can make videos a bit lengthy with today's compressed video file formats.

That we guess, is for the book of faces!

There are other networking sites too, like BigAdda, Fropper and Yari and also Friendster, Hi5 and OKCupid. In the technical world, people start discussions on technical problems and receive solutions to their replies from others who have encountered the same problem earlier in their lives and have found solutions. Thus networking sites are gaining momentum in popularity among people.
