Road to Rio 2016

#)September 13 2007 was the deadline set by the Internatinoal Olympic Committee for the phase 1 process

#)At thet time seven countries submitted the bid

#)These include

  1. Tokyo,Japan
  2. Chicago,USA
  3. Madrid,Spain
  4. Rio De Janeiro,Brazil
  5. Doha,Qatar
  6. Prague,Czech Republic
  7. Baku,Azerbaijan

#)All the seven countries met again on January 14, 2008 for first phase questionnaire

#)IOC analysed the questionnaires, and gave a weighted-average score to each city based on the scores obtained in each of the questionnaire's  on the following eleven different  themes:

  1. Political and social support
  2. General infrastructure
  3. Sports venues
  4. Olympic Village
  5. Environment
  6. Accommodation
  7. Transport
  8. Security
  9. Past experience
  10. Finance
  11. Legacy

#)The score obtained by these cities on the basis of the above themes where

  1. Tokyo,Japan -8.3
  2. Chicago,USA -7.0
  3. Madrid,Spain - 8.1
  4. Rio De Janeiro,Brazil -6.4
  5. Doha,Qatar -6.9
  6. Prague,Czech Republic -5.3
  7. Baku,Azerbaijan - 4.3

#)Inspite of Doha scoring higher than Rio,becaous of Doha's weaknesses of a small population, lack of facilities, and Games dates outside of the IOC's desired window may have been too large an obstacle for the IOC to accept

#)And naturally the top 4 countries entered for the final bid which was held on October 2nd, 2009

Final Four

#)There were four finalists – Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid and Tokyo, though they were soon down to two, as Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated by the International Olympic Committee.

#0The elimination of Chicago in the first round came as a bit of a surprise as they eliminated with only 18 votes out of 95 in the first round, given that the bookmakers had designated it as a clear favourite, while Tokyo accumulated the least amount(20 votes) of the 95 votes available in the second phase of the selection process.

#)A number of factors were considered by the IOC's voting members in determining an Olympic host city and the 11 themes were discussed earlier(the 11 themeses discussed above).

#) Apart from this , other factors such as emotion, sentiment, geography, politics, self-interest and other factors also play a role

#)The final hours of the day of the vote saw high-powered leaders arriving from the respective four countries to each do a final sales pitch to the IOC.

#)After the elimination of Chicago and Tokyo  the race was between Brazil and Spain

#)And to everyone's suprise Rio won the bide by 66-32 in the third and final round

Events of Rio 2016

#)Rio 2016 includes 26 sports and a total of 38 disciplines.

#)There are two open spots for sports and initially seven sports began the bidding for inclusion in the 2016 program.

#)These seven games are Baseball and softball, which were dropped from the program in 2005, karate, squash, golf, roller sports (inline speed skating) and rugby union all applied to be includedand their  leaders of the seven sports held presentations in front of the IOC executive board in June 2009.

#)Meanwhile in August, the executive board initially gave its approval to rugby sevens, a seven-man version of rugby union, by a majority vote, twhich eliminates baseball, roller sports, and squash, from contention.

#)From the remaining three, golf, karate, and softball, the board approved golf as a result of consultation.

#)But the decision of including this games  will be made on the 9th October 2009 with a new system which requires a full majority rather than two third majority
