Ametology Of A City Called "MUMBAI"
" What is in the name? " - William Shakespeare. Well everything is in the name. some names have heritage value, some are indicative of special events took place in that area and some are metamorphosed form. Mumbai is a very old and growing city. For the convenience of people, its suburban are given particular name which then became the identity of the suburban. For sustaining and maintaining the characteristics of any town in general and Mumbai in particular, it has been chosen to naming the suburban with different title.
Mumbai is honoured by many names like " Gateway Of India", " Hollywood Of India" etc, but how did the got its original name?
It is believed that the name Mumbai came from "Mumbadevi", the holy godesses of Mumbai. Mumbadevi then became Mumbaaai and was later called as Mumbai. According to some scholars, the name Mumbai was given by portugese. When they came to India, they saw a beautiful channel near this city and they called it " Bombeshya" which then became Bombay and Mumbai in marathi. Another story tells that, earlier large no of Bombyl fishes were found in Arabian Sea. The name Bombay thus came from Bombyl and was then called as Mumbai. That was how the name Mumbai was discovered.
Suburban Of Mumbai:
1) Fort:
Earlier there was an old fort called Fort St. George. This fort was demoloshed in 1872. The fort had three doors called as Churchgate, Apollogate and Bazargate. Due to this fort this suburban is called as Fort.
2) Bhaikhala:
Bhaikhala got its name by the combination of two words i.e. " bhav " and " khal ". Khal means plain ground and Bhav is the name of a tree. Earlier there was a plain ground there on which there were many Bhav trees. Hence it is called as Bhaikhala.
3) Dadar:
Dadar means stairs . It forms a way towards Mahim and Parel . Hence it is considered as stair joining both this suburban. Thus it got its name.
4) Naygao:
The word Naygao is metamorphosed from Nyayagao. Earlier King bhimraja used to hold his court here and it was then called as Nyayagram which later came to be known as Naygao.
5) Girgaon:
The original name of Girgaon is Girigram. Giri means mountain and Gram means village. Earlier this village was situated at the foot of Malabar hills and hence it was called Girigram which then became Girigaon.
6) Mahim:
Raja Bhimdev populated a city called Mahimavati. this Mahimavati is now called as Mahim.
7) Charni Road:
The name Charni has undergone metamorphosed from "Chendani", a place situated in Thane district. Many People of this Chendani settled here and hence this place was called as Chendani. During British rule this place was called as Charni and the road was attached to it. Thus it came to be known as Charni Road.
8) Kolaba:
Earlier in Kolaba there was a big colony of fisherman. Kolaba is metamorphosed from kolbhat . in portugese " Kol" means fisherman and " bhat " menas colony and thus kolbhat menas colony of fishermen. This kolbhat later became Kolaba.
