Why should we know about the Group Discussion?

We have to think about or objective or goal in the life. Once you clearly define your long term and short term goals,you become goal oriented. Thereafter,all your efforts will lead you to your goal.

Then what are the goals on knowing about Group discussion?

It can be long term or short term.

Long term goal

You are trying to master the art of group discussion because you want to get admission to a specialisation course or you are competing for a prized post. Either way,you are doing it with an eye on your career-to get a job with a good employer,to get a good salary.

Short term goal

Because your career depends on the outcome of GD,your immediate objective is to stand out of GD as a winner.

Once you know where you want to go,your goal is set....

A close look at your goal...

So,your immediate goal is to succeed in GD. Let us now have a look at what does your success in GD depend upon.

You will be successful in GD if you display the following qualities in Group Discussion

1.You make a positive contribution to GD.

2.You make an attempt to achieve a consensus.

3.You display some managerial qualities.

Let us go in deep about the first point..

Make a positive contribution in GD

It means that,

• You must make some contribution to the GD.
• Merely making a contribution is not enough. This contribution should be positive , meaningful and not sidetracking the main issue.
• The contribution should be sensible enough to relate the topic and the group.
• The requirement of making a positive and meaningful contribution necessarily implies that you should have some knowledge of the topic.
• You should be able to place and present your knowledge in logical sequence.
• If you are not comfortable with the topic,you should still be able to make a positive and meaningful contribution.
• To express yourself clearly,you should be a good communicator.
• To get a good rating,you should be seen and heard by the group while making such a contribution; if the group can hear you then the evaluator also can hear you.

The second requirement is that you are to make an attempt to achieve a consensus. Note that i am laying stress on the words “ attempt to achieve”.

• You should make an attempt to achieve consensus.
• You are not to achieve consensus but to merely make an attempt to achieve consensus.
• Even if you do not succeed in your attempt,the very fact that you have made an attempt,will fetch you some points. This is so because,in the very limited time,you cannot be expected  to convince everyone. If you can succeed in achieving a consensus,it is well and good. Otherwise, a mere attempt will do.
• The consensus which you are attempting should be in the right direction that is it should be logical.

The third requirement is that you should display some leadership qualities.

• Sometimes there will be a dead manner in presenting the points , at that time you can take initiative to make it live.
• Don't try to show that you have lots of managerial skills. Be yourself and act wisely.
• If you think that discussion is going away from the topic then you can come up with suitable points which will bring back the discussion on to the right path.

Having defined the goal and depth. You can surely be succeeded in a Group discussion.

Be  Alert

Be Active

Present your points clearly.

Point out strategy about other's opinion.
