Google has become a part of our daily life particularly for internet users and and indispensable too to conduct effective search of the thing you desire and ever since it was born which is a little more than 10 years, it is synonymous with search engine. Now let us first begin with name “Google”- why it was named so? The word “Google” derives its name from the word “Googol” which is a mathematical expression for a number 1 followed by one hundred zeros thus symbolizing the goals and objectives of google to organize and manage a mind-boggling database of information on the net. Thus on the click of a mouse we are presented with a huge reserves of rich information and knowledge on any topic under the sun. As it is very clear that it is a powerful tool we need to maneuvre its various facilities towards its effective optimization.

 

As a search engine where does Google precisely stand? A survey has reveled that its market share is a little less than 50% and others like Yahoo, MSN, AOL, MY WAY, ASK, EARTLINK, DOGPILE, NETSCAPE, iWON and others account for 23%, 11%, 2.5%, 2%, 0.6%, 0.6%, 0.6%, 0.5% and 4.7% respectively. It is quite evident that Google is miles away from its competitors in this field.

 

Apart from being a leader as a search engine it has got some other facilities which can be used by one with good effect. Its sheer size and volume is breathtaking. It has approximately 20 billion pages!! Be it image, books search, blogs search, finance, video, it has a phenomenal range. You can use tools like Google Maps, Picasa, Gmail, Calendar, Spreadsheets etc. very imaginatively. Only one needs to be familiar with its tremendous features. For instance , very few persons know that Google has calculator as well. Just type your formula at Google it will return the result. Similarly Google has a converter too and it can be used to convert currencies, units etc. In order to optimize its uses it is important to familiarize one self with all the wide range of facilities it offers.
