Two recent events of the most scandalous kinds have rocked the nation and coarsened our conscience once again. The one is involving a very senior politician who thoroughly disgraced the office of the governor and another of a gruesome nature in which a former top cop of Haryana has brought shame upon his office. There is a predominant section of our society the members of which believe that the unholy alliance among the corrupt politicians and corrupt bureaucrats and policemen is the single most and most daunting stumbling block in the way of India's achieving her true place in the comity of nations.

Mr. Narayan Dutt Tewari , a veteran of many a political battle, has embroiled himself in a sex scandal at the age of eighty six and even when his immoral activities became public knowledge ,he did neither display any remorse nor did he have the common sense to step down from the post of governor. He made a last ditch attempt to sweep it under the carpet by going to High Court. It was not before intense pressure from various women's organizations in Andhra Pradesh that he was made to quit. It is not Mr. Tewary's only escapade. A few months back faced a paternity suit in a case which did not project him in a good light. What is tragicomic is the fact leaders like Mr. Tiwary and his ilk show the cheek to sermonize the youth of this country to maintain probity in public life while turning the Governor's House into a sex den! he

Cry my countrymen, cry your hearts out!

There is another diabolical character who dared to don the uniform of the police, Mr. S.P.S Rathore, the all mighty former Director General of Police of Haryana who thrived with all his sexual perversities at the cost of a 14-year old Ruchika Girhotra, a budding tennis player who was physically abused by this monster of a police officer to the point that she ended her life by committing suicide nineteen years ago. And the CBI court has sentenced him for just six months. What is all the more sickening that it has taken nineteen long years to produce this classic judgment. Ruchika's brother was tortured and the member of her family lived all these years under fear of terror and Mr Rathore enjoyed all the protection from his political bosses.

The only heartening feature of these two murky episodes is the popular upsurge of anger and disgust against these two most shameful episodes of our times. In the not distant past in the Jessica Lal murder case the authorities were made to beat a hasty retreat. One can just hope that the government would be able to read the mood of the people and ensure that justice is done Ruchika so that her soul can rest in peace!
