2009- a round up
Hi friends, I would like to recall you what all important events happened last year 2009, through this article.
JANUARY:
• The White House bid farewell to George W. Bush and Barrack Obama took oath of office. He became the first Afro-American to become Mr.President of the U.S. And he is the 44th President of the U.S.
• Satyam Computers’ CEO Ramalinga Raju’s money scandal came to limelight. He himself accepted his cheating of Rs.8000 crores and was hence arrested.
• AR Rahman received Golden Globe Award for his Original score in Slumdog Millionaire.
• Sheik Hasina was elected as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the 2nd time.
FEBRUARY:
• Martin Luther King-III, son of Martin Luther King visited India to mark the 50th year of his father visit to the same country.
• AR Rahman won the Academy Award for his score in Slumdog Millionaire. He bagged two awards for the Best Song category and Original Music Score category.
• Resul Pookutty, Sound Engineer also won the Oscars for the same movie in the Best Sound Mixing category.
• Amazon introduced Kindle-2 instrument to read e-books and e-papers. It costs Rs.12000 at present.
• Bhimsen Joshi received Bharat Ratna Award.
MARCH:
• The Kingpin of stamp paper scam, Abdul Karim Telgi was given 7 years imprisonment.
• Padma Awards were conferred to awardees.
APRIL:
• Navin Chawla took charge as 16th Chief Election Commissioner of India.
• Najib Tun Razak was elected as the P.M of Malaysia.
• The former Indian ambassador to the United Nations, Nirupam Sen, has been appointed Special Senior Adviser to the President of the General Assembly.
MAY:
• India’s 15th Lok Sabha was formed.
• Congress & UPA made a clean sweep at the general elections and Dr.Manmohan Singh became the Prime Minister for the 2nd consecutive time.
• LTTE Chief Prabhakaran was shot dead by Sri Lankan Army.
• Indian students were attacked by Australians. Such incidents continued throughout the year.
• Air Chief Marshal Pradeep Vasant Naik took office as the Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force.
• Naveen Patnaik became the C.M of Orissa for the 3rd consecutive time.
• Pawan Kumar Samling became the C.M of Sikkim for the 4th consecutive time.
• Madav Kumar took oath of office as the Prime Minister of Nepal followed by the resignation of Prasanda.
• Cyclone Aila caused great damage to regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh.
JUNE:
• Meira Kumar was selected as the Speaker of the newly formed 15th Lok Sabha. She became the 1st woman to be the Speaker.
• Nandan Nilekani was made the Chairman of the new Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), after a successful career at Infosys Technologies Ltd.
• Ramesh Pokhriyal replaced Khanduri as new Uttarakhand C.M.
• Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is the sixth and current President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
• King of Pop Michael Jackson died out of a heart attack. The entire world cried for the death of this legend.
• The 5.6km long Sea-link connecting Bandhra and Orli was opened for traffic.
JULY:
• Chairman of Microsoft Corp. Mr. Bill Gates was awarded with the Indira Gandhi International Peace Prize Award by the President of India.
• 1st Atom power Submarine INS Arihant was launched.
• National Security Guard (N.S.G)’s Chennai division was started (opened) by P.Chidambaram, Home Minister of India, following the 26/11 Mumbai attack.
• Hillary Clinton made a 5 day visit to India.
• Century’s longest Solar Eclipse occurred.
AUGUST:
• Deep Joshi, an Indian social worker and NGO activist was the recipient of 2009 Magsaysay awards.
• Stefania Fernandes crowned as Miss Universe 2009.
• Jaswant Singh’s ‘Jinnah, India-Partition Independence’ book was released. But unfortunately he was removed from BJP due to the critics followed by the release.
• Nirubama Rao took charge as the Foreign Secretary of India.
SEPTEMBER:
• Andhra Pradesh C.M. Dr. Y.S.Rajasekara Reddy died in a Helicopter clash in the Nallamalla hills in Chitoor district. Rosaiah was made the CM of A.P.
• Central Government announced the abolition of C.B.S.E. Board exams for standard-10 from next academic year.
• Orionsat-2 was launched from Sriharikota.
• NASA announced the presence of water resources on the moon, based on the information provided by Chandrayan.
• Tamilnadu Ex.C.M Annadurai’s Centenary year was celebrated.
OCTOBER:
• Maldives President Nasheed conducted his Cabinet meeting under water to create awareness about Global warming.
• I.O.C depot in Jaipur, Rajasthan caught fire and resulted in Rs.300 crores loss.
• Radhakrishnan became the new Chairman of ISRO.
• Dorjee Khandu took office as the C.M of Arunachal Pradesh.
• Bhupinder Singh Hooda took office as the C.M of Haryana.
• Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall won this year's Booker Prize.
NOVEMBER:
• Prathibha Patil, President of India became the first president to fly in a war plane. She did this by flying in super fast Sukhoi war plane.
• Prime Minister Manmohan Singh became the 1st Indian P.M to attend the State Dinner at the White House. This dinner was given by Obama after he took charge. Rattan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, AR Rahman and other notable Indians attended the dinner.
• An ego clash between Karnataka CM and Reddy brothers rose but was later resolved.
DECEMBER:
• The 12 day Copenhagen Summit on Climatic change ended without taking/passing any decision.
• Central Government showed green signal for separate Telungana state proposal following the 11 days hunger strike by Chandrasekara Rao, TSR Chief.
• Nitin Katkari and Sushma Swaraj became the President of BJP and the Opposition leader of the Lok Sabha followed by the step down of Rajnath Singh and L.K.Advani respectively.
• Indian Cricket Team became the World No.1 Test team for the 1st time in history.
