Long, long ago, when the earth was still quite new, all the animals that had tails, met together. Each animal made a decision as to how it would use its tail. Man had not been given tail. He had been given hands and body that walked in an upright position. The gentle Cow was the first to speak. She lowed, `I shall use mine to brush away the files that worry me, in this way, and my tail will be really useful’. `Quite right,’ Neighed the horse, who liked to agree with the Cow. `I shall do the same with mine.’ The Horse’s tail however was not at all like the Cow’s. `I shall wag mine to snow that I am pleased,’ barked the happy little Dog, wagging his tail furiously to show what he meant. `That’s the lasting I would do,’ said the haughty Cat, spitting in a disagreeable manner at the Dog with whom she could never get along. `I shall wag mine to show that I am angry. `I shall swing from branch to branch with mine,’ chattered the lively Monkey, and swung on a branch to prove it. The peacock said rather proudly, strutting about all the while, `I shall spread mine out to display my magnificent pattern and colors.’ Modesty was not virtue for him! `I shall bob mine up like a little white flag to indicate that danger is near,’ the timid Rabbit ventured, referring to his scout. The Kangaroo said, `I shall use mine as an extra leg to help me jump. I can also use it as a weapon.’ So saying he swished his powerful tail from side to side whiles all the animals hastily made room. `I shall use mine to keep my back warm in winter –time,’ chattered the Squirrel. He really loved his fluffy tail which he could curl over his back. `I shall need mine too steer myself through the water,’ said the Fish, and he blew a few bubbles to make everyone listen. The tadpole was the only creature who did not know what to do with its tiny tail. `When I become a frog, I shall not need it at all’, crocked the tadpole softly, almost to itself. `I shall get rid of it as soon as I can. By then my strong legs will be all I will need,’ he added, an exclusive tail.’ And to this day, all these animals who met to discuss their use their tails the way they made up their minds to, long, long ago when the earth was still young.
