Her words felt like piercing thorns to me. She was cursing me for saving her. I was trying to console Anita but she was not at all ready to listen anything. Anita was my friend Sunil’s wife. There was some dispute in the married life of this couple which was not getting settled perhaps due to the arrogant nature of both Sunil and Anita. More than dispute it was their ego that was hindering in between the relationship.

It was an arranged marriage and the families as well as Anita and Sunil were very enthusiastic at the time of marriage. Anita was working as neurosurgeon in the city’s leading private hospital while Sunil was an orthopaedic surgeon in the government hospital. Initial few weeks of their married life went very well but soon the happy days came to an end. Sunil wanted Anita to join the Government job while she was satisfied with her present job.

Anita said that she was enjoying a nice reputation, facilities, working environment and salary in the private hospital so why should she shift to Government job. While Sunil was of the opinion that in Government job they will be more stable in married life as it offers the advantages of security in adverse times as well as leave facilities.

The argument has increased to a level where they had stopped talking to each other. In the meantime the deadline for applying had passed and now Sunil was even more annoyed. Sunil’s parents too advised Sunil not to interfere with Anita’s career but to him it had become a kind of prestige issue.

Both had begun living separately. Anita had shifted from Sunil’s Government residence to her hospital premises.

I tried to become a mediator to bring both together but now the issue was, why should I talk first?

Three months have passed and I am still trying to make them understand that it is the matter of happiness in their married life, so both should leave their egos and talk to each other and Sunil must not interfere with Anita’s career.

But today after Anita's effort to commit suicide, I am compelled to think that I shouldn't come in between the matters of this couple.
