When I was young, I longed to have a pet dog. But my mother was always against the idea. She felt that she was already too busy and could not invite extra work. My sister and I pleaded with her many times but she never agreed. At last my father solved the problem. He bought us a beautiful Pomeranian pup. We were excited! Both of us wanted to hold the pup. We were thrilled to have a pet we badly wanted. “Holding the pup is not enough! You have certain duties towards it. Both of you have to perform your duty or else I’ll return the pup to its owner after a week,” announced my father. Soon the duties were divided. I was to keep the pup clean, bathe it, and remove the ticks, and take it out for a walk. My sister had to feed the pup and brush it. We called our pet ‘Ruffle”. In time Ruffle became a part of the family. Both of us did our duties to our best. Sometimes we exchanged our duties just for fun. Soon mother started enjoying having Ruffle around. She was pleased to have a well looked after pet. Ruffle stayed with her when all of us were at school. So now Ruffle was truly a member of our family. What does this lesson you teach? Write your answer in five sentences. An Act of Kindness The other day I went to have a cup of coffee with a friend of mine. When I parked my car near her gate, I saw something very unusual. Along the outer wall of my friend’s house, I saw six small shelters. They were neither huts, nor tents. Pieces of tarpaulin had been spread over bamboo frames. “What are these tents for? “ I asked Kiran, my friend. “These are shelters for stray dogs. My daughter Ritu is a dog lover. This is her idea,” my friend explained. “But how does this help?” I asked. “The winter nights are extremely cold. The stray dogs have to suffer through them. Since we made these shelters, many stray huts every night. It has not cost us much but it has provided so much comfort to many dogs. Ritu’s idea has really proved very useful,” said Kiran. Imagine two or three dogs sit huddled in one tent. In one there is a litter of pups.” When I was driving back home, my heart was really full. The Kind act of Ritu could help many creatures of God. It saved some of them from death. It gave so much comfort and warmth to so many. Bu how many of us think or act like Ritu?
