College days and studies abroad

Ramesh was a very shining student. His class mates envied his outstanding academic achievements.  Out of jealousy, he was called Book worm.  Many ridiculed him saying that he was married to books and so he would never marry a woman.

Despite his indulgence in studies, he would sometimes gossip with Rajani, his classmate.  They would talk on diverse topics like movies, songs, sports and so on.

Ramesh was sent on scholarship abroad for higher studies in Physics.  Soon, he forgot all about college, Rajani and others.

On return to India, Ramesh was selected for key managerial job in a reputed company and posted to Kolkatta.

Suicide by cousin

One day, he got a message that his cousin’s marriage was fixed.   Being busy, he just sent a letter of congratulation expressing his inability to attend the wedding ceremony of his cousin Bhushan.

A year later, he received the sad news that  Bhushan committed suicide by jumping from a railway over bridge.  Ramesh was deeply aggrieved.  He rushed to Meerut.

Bhushan was a very successful businessman at Meerut.  He was pious, religious, self confident and was far from vices like alcohol, gambling.  He was quite healthy and was never seen visiting a doctor for his own treatment.   Ramesh could not believe that his cousin could kill himself.

Widow is familiar face

Ramesh noticed that Bhushan’s widow was a familiar face.  He could not recollect where he saw her.   Rajani also came to offer her condolence to the aggrieved family.

Next day, Ramesh and Rajani met alone in a restaurant.  They chatted for hours.  Suddenly, Ramesh said-  Bhushan’s widow seems a familiar person.  But I do not know where I saw her.

Rajani said- Ramesh, she was our class fellow, Swati. You must have seen her in college. Rajani told many things about Swati. Rajani commented during course of conversation- But Swati is very lucky. Though I am so sorry for your cousin, Swati has become a Billionaire in her own name overnight.   Despite being aggrieved she is so rich.  It is said that if a widow has wealth, she is only half widow.

Widow Swati – expert in imitating hand writings

They moved to other topics. Swati again figured in the talk.  Suddenly, Rajani exclaimed: - One thing is very remarkable about Swati.  During college days, she could imitate hand writing of any one   Nobody could differentiate the real from the imitated handwriting.

They parted.   Ramesh again went to Bhushan’s house and asked his father- Uncle: How do you know that  Bhushan committed suicide. Could this not be murder or accident?  It is unlikely that he could kill himself.

Bhushan’s  father said-  Ramesh. The police investigated. They found that Ramesh had been reading books on suicide and similar matter.   A suicide note was also found in his pocket.

Ramesh got very suspicious.  It was very probable that Swati placed all books on suicide in her husband’s room and also wrote the fake suicide note.

Ramesh again met Rajani and said to her:   This is my first ever request.  Please do not disappoint me.

Rajani:   Go on Ramesh.  I love you even today.  That is why I am still unmarried.  I can do anything for you. Just say, what you want.

Ramesh said- Rajani, I love you too.  I never came close to any other girl in my life.  But we shall talk this later.   Now help me in booking the killer of my cousin.

Rajani said surprisingly- What?  Is this not suicide?

‘No Rajani’- said Ramesh- “You told that Swati is expert in imitating hand writing. I believe that she wrote fake suicide letter.”

Rajani promised that she would do her best.

Two days later Rajani met Ramesh with a recorded video, containing Swati’s confession.

Rajani had invited Swati to her residence and being her close friend, offered whiskey.  On reluctance, Rajani said that all were unhappy on her husband’s untimely death but nobody could bring him back to life. On strong persuasion, Swati accepted drink.  Soon Swati was intoxicated enough.  Rajani encouraged her to talk more.  In her unguarded moment, swati revealed the truth. She said: “ That bastard Bhushan made my life miserable. I would eat, wear and drink only what he liked. He made me a prisoner.  I have been feeling like a bird caged in gold cage. He can no more stop me taking wine and going to club. Now I am really free. I shall live as like.”  Rajani said:  But you are then so lucky that Bhushan killed himself.”

Swati burst- That bastard would not go so easily.  My skill worked.  I wrote the suicide note.  Pushed him and drove back home. “

Ramesh and Rajani went to police station and got the case reopened.

Swati  is in jail. She is being prosecuted for murder.

Now  Ramesh  is happily married to Rajani.
