MARTYR’S MEMORIAL,PATNA

A very special historical monument stands in front of the Bihar Assembly in Patna. It is called by the name ’Martyr’s Memorial’, which was built in the memory of the seven youths who sacrificed their lives for the sake of their country’s freedom.

The Quit India resolution was adopted on August 8, 1942. Gandhiji gave a call to the nation: “Do or Die”. Thousands and lakhs of Indians came forward on Gandhiji’s call.  They were determined to fight to death against British rule. Meetings and rallies were held in every nook and corner of the country. The British Government arrested all important leaders and tried to suppress the movement. In Bihar, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was arrested on 9th August, even though he was seriously ill. Thousands were beaten and canned by the police and hundreds of leaders were arrested throughout Bihar. This aroused anger in the youths of Bihar. The British Administration captured the Sadakat Ashram, Congress and Socialist Party office and got Bihar Vidyapeeth vacated. Every possible way was tried to suppress the movement. But it became more aggressive and the tricolor national Flag was hoisted atop the Prince of Wales Medical College in Patna on August10th.  These seven youths were killed in firing on 11th August, in trying to hoist the tricolor national Flag atop the Assembly Building. This event increased the impatience in the peace loving and patient Indians.

After the Independence, the Bihar Government built this Memorial. It was inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s First President, on October 24th, 1956. We must bow to these martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the glory of India.
